Just read his Address at Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 31, 1936. The whole thing still feels very relevant and is a worthwhile (and not too long) read. The quote that stuck with me today was:

It wouldn’t matter as long as Congress, the courts, and the states remain as undemocratically corrupt as they are now. The US is cooked and isn’t going to get better. The best case scenario is that it falls apart and the states form new, sovereign entities. The fascists won’t just disappear, and they wont learn any lessons from the current administration or from reaping what they sow.
Short of massive, unprecedented, and devastating civil action, there is no hope.

Sure, I got that the first go around. It was the second time that cemented things for me. Nobody was ignorant of who and what Trump was in 2024. Those are the people I think are hateful bigots willing to burn down the entire country if only it'll take a few undesirables out with them.
Yup. From the outside, it's been reasonably obvious since 2007: The current system isn't working, and the ones who offer to change things are the ones who will actually get the votes.
This became even more apparent post-covid: Biden offered a return to normalcy, while Trump wanted to "fix everything". You can say what you want about Trump (and I will probably agree with most of it), but he offered something else than the same old neolib system that has failed more and more people every year.
The problem with today's mainstream politicians is that one side tries to return to Obama era "middle ground" policies while the other side can be summed up by this shamelessly stolen comic:
A sensible politician who wants to win an election needs to understand that "the middle ground" no longer means not stepping on toes. The middle ground these days means shaking up the current system to provide basic necessities for those who have been ignored for decades. People turn fascist for the same reason people turn tankie; when you're starving and someone promises all the potatoes you can drink, of course that sounds better than the current situation.
I truly hope Mamdani or someone like him gets to appear as more than "ermagerd scary communist" to the right side, because I'm sure most of those who would insta-hate "The left" actually can get behind a lot of the actual policies once they get beyond the politics.
I'm all for rainbow-rights, eco-friendly living, and diversity, but most peoples priorities are a lot more immediate: putting food in the table. Let's all hope the DNC realizes this.
Was working for hardcore Southern Baptists several years back. They admitted they liked Bernie's words. Also, they hated George Bush. I'm certain they hate Trump with every fiber of their soul, but they're brainwashed into hating "socialism". Smart men! Just can't get past "liberal bad".
In other words, the other major Trump constituency (aside from conservatives obviously) is gullible people who got swindled.
That wasn't really a revelation to me and, while I do have some pity for those people, I also think they deserve every bit of hate they get for fucking up so badly that they've destroyed the whole country. We are suffering the consequences of their laziness and stupidity, and that almost pisses me off even more than the fuckwads who voted for fascism on purpose.

If democrats are successful and get consistently elected, then that means they have to actually do something and run on a platform beyond “I’m not Republican” to not get primaried.
