Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

After a frustrating and futile three years in federal bankruptcy court, the Sandy Hook families who sued Infowars conspiracist Alex Jones for defamation thought they were finally getting closer to collecting the $1.3 billion that he owes them.

But as a hearing in federal bankruptcy court in Texas got underway on Thursday, things seemed to be going the other way, with all parties showing signs of exasperation, including the judge.

"This case has been pending since 2022, folks. It just needs to end," said U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Christopher Lopez. The more the case drags on, he added, the more money from Jones' estate will be going toward paying the lawyers, leaving less for the families.

I see why lawyers in America make a lot more than other countries, the whole system is designed to suck both sides dry

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 44 points 8 months ago

And they're the ones that designed it that way.

I don’t think all of these parents are in it for the money. I’m sure some of them just want him bankrupted, no matter how long it takes. Who cares if it goes to lawyers, as long as Jones doesn’t get to keep a dime?

The parents were going to help The Onion buy Infowars. They are definitely not in it for the money

It's not really about the money.

There's no amount of money that will make Jones stop. He to this day still shit talks the families and victims of Sandy Hook. That's why they want him bankrupted and InfoWars shut down- not to have his money, but because as long as he has a public platform, he'll never stop.

I'm sure this guy is still living the good life as well. There's no way he is struggling at all and that's the part i hate the most. Our system sucks so much...

Last I heard, he was spending thousands of dollars a week.

[–] MyOpinion@lemmy.today 26 points 8 months ago

And that piece of shit continues to broadcast his lies.

I really wish there was justice. He would never be comfortable again if there was.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 14 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I guess it's very profitable to be a lawyer for a guilty man.

[–] d00phy@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

This is why Trump has the reputation he has for not paying people.

[–] Mustakrakish@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago

He should just be in fucking jail

[–] valkyrieangela@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 8 months ago

This judge appears corrupt and/or incompetent from the outside. The only reason there are so many delays is because they've been wishy washy about how Jones' bankruptcy is dealt with. This is stupid.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 10 points 8 months ago

Listen to this judge bitching about how long this is taking, when it's HIS JOB to manage the case. If it's not going right, it's directly his fault. Force the defendant to pay up by a certain date, or hold him, and his lawyers, in contempt, while the court directs the final disposal of his assets as they sit in jail.
