Lots of cults do this to seperate people from their former lives and reinforce their commitment to the group

[–] Marthirial@lemmy.world 41 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That explains why conservatives are now called Nazis.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 1 year ago

No, that's because they act like Nazis.

Dude! This is the most prophetic thing in the whole Bible. Hear me out. Simon son of Jonah (not the whale guy), is a fisherman, and Jesus tells him to come along and fish people instead. Jesus gives him a nickname, Kephas, this nickname was then translated from Aramaic into Greek, Petros. Jesus later says that "On this rock I will build my church", and that's the meaning of the nickname Kephas/Petros, Stone, or Rock.

Now considering that Simon's full name was Simon bar Yonah, in English: Simon son of John, or even Simon Johnson, then his full name with Jesus' nickname is: Simon the Rock Johnson!

Funny coincidence? Skipping ahead a few thousand years, our current Rock is called Dwayne, and the meaning of that name happens to be Fishhook. And if you really wanna bring it home, Dwayne the Rock Johnson's daughter is named... SIMONE! We've come full circle! The end times are near.

Am I mad as a hatter?

Would that just be Simone Dwaynesdaughter?

Simulation theory confirmed

I have no idea if any of that is true, but I'm too lazy to check, so have an upvote

This is more a mythology meme instead of a history meme though.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 73 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Mythology is fine. Mythology is part of historical cultures. We have Zeus and Prometheus and memes of that sort too.

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 42 points 1 year ago (4 children)

My man, mythology is fine AF. Have you even SEEN Helen of Troy?!?!

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 year ago (2 children)

She made me launch a thousand ships, if you know what I mean

[–] MrPibb@lemmynsfw.com 19 points 1 year ago

That’s a lot of Seamen.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Just wear one of these

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 year ago

Helen of Troy

Casting agent in future portrayals: "Find me the blandest blondest white woman with no distinguishing facial features who could easily be swapped out with another without the audience noticing."

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

she's a babe

[–] LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago

I heard she walks like a gunslinger

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 year ago

Fair enough I guess.

Kind of but early Christians did really change their names after joining the faith. Famous example being Saul/Paul who was probably more influential on Christianity than Jesus himself.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even God did it. Set/Ba'al to Yehwah.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

It took me a minute to parse your second phrase; I thought it was a pseudo terminal command.

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 18 points 1 year ago

sed 's/baal/yahweh/'

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago

It's templeOS' version for 'set path' (/s) (yes, templeOS is something that exists)

[–] Kellenved@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fucking Paul completely screwed up Jesus intentions

[–] glandrid@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I blame him for breaking up the Beatles, too!

[–] swab148@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

That was ~~Judas~~ Yoko

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I also changed my name because of my faith and not because I'm doing tax fraud

[–] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As often said, no academic argues Jesus was not a historical figure. Only militant terminally online atheists do.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm not talking about whether Jesus existed or not. The bible is not a historic accord is what I'm saying.

[–] bigFab@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Still, Simon/Peter could just as fine be as real as the person historically named Jesus. Assuming Jesus wasn't talking to imaginary friends all day.

[–] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 1 points 1 year ago

That’s not their point. Their point is the Bible isn’t a reliable source.

[–] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 3 points 1 year ago

Got you, no argument against that

[–] Kolrami@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

This is almost exactly as weird as Dwayne Johnson being called The Rock.
