The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.

The records viewed by ProPublica list Ochoa, 43, and Gutierrez, 35, as the shooters during the deadly encounter last weekend that left Pretti dead and ignited massive protests and calls for criminal investigations.

Both men were assigned to Operation Metro Surge, an immigration enforcement dragnet launched in December that sent scores of armed and masked agents across the city.

CBP, which employs both men, has so far refused to release their names and has disclosed few other facts about the deadly incident, which came days after a different immigration agent shot and killed another Minneapolis protester, a 37-year-old mother of three named Renee Good.

Something that jumped out at me: These guys had worked for CBP for ~8 and ~12 years, respectively.

These thugs, who wrestled an uninvolved bystander to the ground, then shot him in the back while he lay there helpless, were not panicky newbs. These were veteran CBP officers.

Is this just what veteran CBP officers are like?

Is this just what veteran CBP officers are like?

I read an article a few weeks ago, which pointed out that ICE does work internal to the US and is generally pretty restrained. CBP works at the border and is generally more aggressive, chasing down and subduing people who've crossed the border, usually in remote and hostile territory. They said that CBP could often be violent, and now those people were being released to use those same tactics against American cities.

So yes, this is exactly what some CBP officers are like.

Jonathon Ross, who murdered Renee Good, works for CBP for 10 years. Abolishing ICE isn't enough. All of DHS needs to be uprooted.

I dated a CBP officer once. They only get some basic training on how to use their weapon, and some simulations and that's it. Just some basic training to defend themselves.  Not this kind of stuff.

Reminds me of The Simpsons when Homer became a juvie prison guard:

There are a couple possibilities:

  • These names could be fake.
  • The regime could've encouraged or tapped trusted long time agents to intentionally kill as part of their escalation plan against the american people.
  • These guys are just violence-lovers who have been waiting for a time they thought they could get away with murder.
  • Even veteran CBP officers are incompentent fucking newbs.

You forgot an option they've done stuff like this before, likely to a minority or immigrant, and thought they could continue to get away with it

Or E) B,C, and D

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 19 hours ago

All but the first one are likely. Patsies, maybe, but full-on fictitious? There's no way that wouldn't bite the Nazi admins in the collective ass. The rest? Yeah, all of the above.

[–] Horsecook@sh.itjust.works 16 points 20 hours ago

Are you telling me that all cops are bastards?

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 28 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Well, but a tail light was kicked out. Oh and some spitting happened. Obviously that requires being shot in the back multiple times by Reel Murican Heroez.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

That taillight video looks like ai

That he's in the video and video is authentic.

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Hey, so you're not the first person I've seen with this view. Just curious what about the taillight video indicates to you that it is AI and not real footage. Is there anything specific you can point to, or is it just a feeling you have? Honest question, no judgement.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 12 points 19 hours ago

You're not going to kick a taillight and have it fall out like that unless it was already broken or loose also the wiring is stupidly long. The people in the video I saw also move fucky/ unnaturally unless the video I saw was sped up for a few frames here and there. It could be a doctored video where he really did kick the car, but I doubt the taillight would just fall out like that.

They just finally got permission to do what they always wanted i guess.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 6 points 16 hours ago

Or maybe the other times they've done it, it wasn't on camera in the middle of a busy urban street.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

I listened to a former director's (or something) take and he said likely they were trained for a different kind/style of enforcement, not the crowd control style that Trump shoved them into. I wanna say that's a weak explanation, but I don't know how often they were raiding before Trump.

[–] Horsecook@sh.itjust.works 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Cartel hit man? Border Patrol migrant death squad?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

A quick read of wikipedia says ports of entry checking people and cargo, agriculture (pests, plants, animal disease), stopping weapons and narcotics smuggling, duties and taxes (import specialist, auditor, international trade specialist, and textile analyst). I'm sure there's a shit ton of paperwork. These are not all front line SWAT people, but I'm sure Trump pushed many out. Even for front line they used to plan out raids afaik for like 5 am when the target is asleep, they weren't out for what's now stirring shit up and let's call it crowd control.

[–] Horsecook@sh.itjust.works 12 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

My point being that there’s no role where they’re trained to shoot people in the head at point blank.

Not being trained for crowd control ≠ execute anyone that defies you

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, but if you're untrained, in a high pressure situation and someone yells "GUN" you might well panic.

If you're untrained and you've stood in front of a car you might well panic when someone starts it moving, especially if you've done a similar idiotic thing with a car recently.

Law enforcement needs training in order to not fuck up situations. If they don't have it, this is the inevitable consequence.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 0 points 7 hours ago

I don't know what you're trying to say.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I don’t think this is true information. Why would the admin be honest about this? The gun discipline isn't of people who have practiced even a year with their weapon, for starters.

They’re painting a picture instead.

[–] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 19 points 20 hours ago

According to the article, the names were in government documents which they were able to view. There's no indication that the information was released or intended for release. It sounds more like someone with access leaked the information to them.

It's possible that this is a lie, but I don't see how it helps DHS or the administration. I think it's a lot more likely that there's a complete lack of standards and accountability at CBP and ICE and that the problem has festered for decades. Being a 10 year veteran doesn't mean anything if they aren't enforcing standards and weeding out anyone who falls short.
