This seems wild. This is the last thing I would have expected. Maybe Disney knows they stand no chance against AI and just want to profit from the doom it will bring.
I think it has less to do with their product and more to do with backroom executive bullshit manipulating stock prices, but that's just an armchair opinion.
I think their intent is to create a fuck ton of cheap AI media to flood Disney+ because even their shitty crap costs a lot to produce. If Disney can create content basically for free they could see a pretty big benefit.
Cutting paid animators out of animation has been the disney dream since Walt was still blowing Nazis.

All those who would prompt Sora to generate a video of Donald Duck forcefemming Hitler are environmentally conscious and know that such a video would waste an insane amount of electricity.
Yeah, but this also allows their characters in Sora. So anybody can create media with Mickey Mouse. Though maybe there’s more details in missing.
I have watched a lot do kids shows when my kids were little. I think AI is more than capable of replacing a lot do the low effort junk that is currently created. Dora always felt like it was created by an algorithm.

It'll make the green line go up and that's all they care about. I completely agree that it seems they won't be able to do anything to stop it so they might as well try and make money from it.
It is both wild and infuriating. Any on-hands creative now have a good reason to be outraged at the about-face.
