See, unlike you, I fully own my positions. Andrew Tridgell should, and I mean this, I love seeing people improve, stop using this demon technology created by vampires to suck the life out good natured folk. And if he doesn't, I will stop associating with him, because he's siding with vampires. Simple as.

That's a wild extrapolation. What makes you think i would find it evil to refuse to use a piece of software ? Or to disassociate with someone for any reason whatsoever ? What does that have to do with my position that we shouldn't dogpile on open source maintainers who have been begging for help for ~~years~~ decades and, when nobody stepped up, started using AI to feel the gap ?
To tell you the truth i've been contributing to those "Ai-free software" lists because i think informed choice is awesome and is at the heart of the open source community. In my ideal world people would have all the information to make choices that align with their values. Notice that i never said people should be free to gang up and harass some poor sap whose only crime is to have thanklessly made their lives easier for 30 years.

I don't see how that is relevant to my position on cyber bullying. I don't shy away from my own beliefs including on circlejerk communities such as this one, and my comment history is ample proof of that. Yeah I like AI how cool is that ? I've said it left and right on this godforsaken website, what makes you think i wouldn't dare say the words ? I like AI, i love open source, i hate US tech and hope their CEOs meet a fiery end. I hate that in the current political climate, psychopaths are empowered to proudly display their penchant for violence and domination while still claiming they have the moral high ground. You guys have won, everywhere, you are the most prolific ideological faction in the modern world, what more do you want ?
And yeah i know i'm screaming into the void. You don't ever doubt yourself, you think AI is an apocalyptic religious threat, you think anyone who doesn't share all of your values is in league with demonic entities (in a weirdly homoerotic way for some reason), and anything you do to your perceived enemies is fair game. Everybody understands what you are.
I should have been more clear. To disassociate in this case means to excommunicate from the industry. He's behaving like a scab, so I think it's only fair.

The point of talking, "harassing" as you say, to Andrew Tridgell about this directly is that I don't want him to be excommunicated. I want him to see the light of humanity. I don't want rsync to be thrown in with the wolves.
Because you weren't, and that's exactly the thing I'm critical of. If you were anti AI, you wouldn't be here... doing what you're doing.
Not disclosing this to the crowd I think is a bit dishonest. So for that, I offer you congratulations. I do appreciate it.
Doesn't this seem a bit hypocritical of you? You can see where a bit of antipathy is useful in one case but not in this other one with Tridgell?

No. Tridgell is just some dude who's been writing code to the benefit of everyone for 30 years. A literal ally, hailing back from more idealistic times, and a part of the movement that gave us the language and means to fight technological hegemony in all its forms. Tech CEOs can eat my shit all they do is build closed gardens and use lawfare to protect them.
Making non-technical github issues to insult a maintainer and demand they take certain actions is not talking. Circulating links to those issues on /c/fuck_ai so people pile up with demeaning walls of text and hundreds of emoji reactions is harassing. There are more people parading their contempt for him in those threads, than the total number of people who contributed tickets or code to the project in 30 years. I can't stop thinking about that, it's so fucking cruel. No help, no thank you, just contempt the minute you displease your masters.
Minimizing the harm done is exactly what bullies do. "I didn't do it but if i did it then it wasn't that bad" yeah i know the lyrics too.

rsyncto remain available to you free of charge, while being maintained in a way that perfectly suits your ideals, without it costing you a dollar or even a minute of effort.Because you're not helping him. Because he's been calling for help which isn't coming, and he's starting to burnout but the software he created is now load bearing and the responsibility is enormous. Also because LLMs are getting semi-good at finding vulnerabilities so anybody with 500$ of tokens can find critical bugs in virtually any software, which they have, which is why this release that is being shat on closes 6 CVEs that may otherwise have taken months to address.
And now instead of pitching in with repro tickets and code to help fix the issues introduced by this version, people are calling to spite-fork the whole thing and revert it to a pre-slop commit. As if the community which didn't help when the project was "pure" would now magically find the time and energy to maintain it long term.
