Asian people will divide themselves by skin color, features or nationality, too. Not immune to racism. Its partly a survival instinct from the past that is rearing its ugly side.

If you are living in a country where you are not a citizen, then yes, you need to keep up with the rules related to your stay.

Kubuntu may be a good distro for you. Linux Mint is also great.
