A place to discuss positive changes that can make work more equitable, and to vent about current practices. We are NOT against work; we just want the fruits of our labor to be recognized better.

Thanks for subscribing to /c/[email protected] ! Now that we've grown (and are growing) so quickly, I've had some calls to discuss what this community is for!

What we stand for

As the sidebar says, Work Reform aims to increase the share of rewards reaped by the workers (as opposed to capitalists - be it shareholders or owners), and make work more equitable. We do NOT aim to abolish labor altogether - I personally don’t think that’s a viable societal system. There is no known system in human history where majority of the population can subsist without doing anything in return.

What we need to do

I see a few things necessary to reform the current economic system - let’s call it Awareness, Advocacy and Action:

  • Awareness means getting people to realise that the corporate propaganda they’re hearing isn’t the whole truth.
  • Advocacy means going out and telling people to join the cause, form a local union, etc.
  • Action means taking organized action - writing to politicians, organising dialogues and strikes, etc.

What this space can be used for

In short, all of the above!

  • To raise Awareness, you can post anything that talks about the issue of wage disparity. That means venting about scummy practices, that means posting news that counters corporate propaganda, and that means posting memes and screenshots of relevant tweets.
  • To engage in Advocacy, you can post news about organised action taking place elsewhere that we can celebrate or contribute to.
  • To take Action, you can start a local chapter of your union, organize/engage in online campaigns, etc. This space can be used to help gather people for that purpose.

I personally think the most important thing now is to get more people to rally behind the cause (which means Action and Advocacy). But some of you have really good ideas on taking Action. So feel free to use this space for that purpose.

As it grows, we can discuss how best to use this community as well, so the rules may evolve over time.

Just watched a chain restaurant employees do their hourly picture taking of the store to send off to corporate through a locked down tablet. I asked them about it. Turns out corporations are now using tablets and Ai to manage stores. Holy shit

The time for us to stand united is now!!! Our government is in shambles and our rights, jobs, and lives are at stake. We need to come together in overwhelming numbers to say that enough is enough!

April 5th, 2025 there is a mass protest scheduled in Washington DC at the National Mall. EVERYONE should know about it. That's why today I leased a billboard next to the highway. I shared my story with some of you and it became clear that others feel the same way.

So let's do it. Let's get some billboards!!!

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to lease as many billboards as we can within roughly 150 miles of Washington DC to promote the peaceful day of action on April 5th. Together we will get the word out. Together we will stand side-by-side in Washington. And together WE WILL BE HEARD!!!

The National Education Union (NEU), the largest teaching union in the UK, is concerned AI teaching tools could lead to some in the profession losing work, particularly lower-paid teaching assistants whose tasks could become automated.

Alarm bells were set off in January when the government announced it was giving £1m in funding to 16 tech companies to build teacher AI tools "for feedback and marking, driving high and rising education standards".

I work for the Federal Government (DoD). The new push to have everyone respond to the OSD request for 5 bullets of "what you did last week" was supposedly because "they wanted to make sure the employees actually exist" and aren't dead or fake. However, I had a colleague send me a whole PowerPoint presentation he made on how to use chat GPT (the government version) to read our PD (position description that basically says everything you should be doing for your job) along with your list of things you completed and then rewrites it to ensure it matches what you should be doing.

His reasoning for doing it that way is:

"DOGE has full access to the Global Address List (GAL) as well as other HR resources. This means they know who works where and everything about everyone's position Description (including what the expectations are for that position). In reorganizations, there exists the possibility to downgrade positions. This can only be done by understanding what work the person is performing. The "5 bullets" is how they're going to get that information from everyone in DoD, which means we must be smarter than the system and make sure our input matches what they're measuring"

Essentially, he came up with a prompt to write the bullets to match our position to prevent them from punishing us due to misunderstanding the assignment or not putting the correct tasks in the bullets email. Honestly, there was no guidance and I do way more than 5 things a week, so I wasn't sure what to include and just kind of picked things at random. Hopefully, I didn't screw myself since we've already sent 2 emails for the last 2 weeks. Starting Monday, I'm using his method to ensure I'm playing the game correctly.

I'm glad I know smart people.
