Haha wtf. It's like that thing in schools of "bullies don't get punished, but you will be punished if you fight back"

"fuck me in the ass, that's mildly inconvenient"

I was thinking about this earlier today for myself. Not specifically about computers, but the same principle. If I have something that bugs me and wastes 10 seconds of my time every single day but I could permanently fix the problem in an hour - logically it's worth fixing. Even if it eventually saves time, I have to invest an hour of time and brainpower right now. If it's something I don't really care about, it's just not worth it. I don't need that hassle, I'll just have a small annoyance every day instead of a big annoyance today. I've got better things to do. Like browsing Lemmy apparently

Is it the same specific five people for every child in the world? They must be super busy :/

Actually yes (in my opinion).

There's two options. People have a choice in what they do and can change how they behave - in which case we, as a society, should help them to change and be their best selves. This process would take place somewhere where they could no longer harm anyone, a "locked rehabilitation centre" or whatever. Basically prison but without the hangups on what many prisons are like right now.

Option two, people don't have a choice in what they do and can't change - in which case, how can we blame them? Keep them out of harm's way and let them live the best life they can without being a danger to anyone.

So, theoretically, anybody is eligible for redemption in my mind. Either because they can change and grow, or because they have literally no choice in their antisocial behaviour. In reality, the sort of people we're talking about? I don't know what they would have to do to prove to me that they have actually changed and want to atone for what they've done. Is it even possible to make up for the crimes of politicians and billionaires who will do anything to keep their money and power? Still, I don't think that killing anyone is the correct answer in my ideal world

If I stop buying from Nestlé then the slaves wouldn't have a job any more. Duh.

Just kidding, fuck Nestlé. I've been boycotting for a couple of years although I do miss some of their cereals..

I thought I read that Max Verstappen could never be beaten as the youngest race winner because the age requirement for F1 was increased - But now Kimi Antonelli is here. Am I remembering something wrong?

If you can provide six months of housing, food and support then a person could start earning for themselves. You don't have to provide a lifetime of help for $40,000

There's one person on Mars in that film but in reality there's zero people on Mars. That's a really small margin of error

I cut my own hair today for the first time and I am so happy with the result. I look like a cute little lesbian with a tomboy haircut and I have been smiling every time I see my reflection. It's was really tricky to get right and it took a long time.. I'm sure someone else could have done a better job.. but I finally look like myself! I put my jewellery back on for the first time in months because I felt like I deserve to look my best.

I got exactly one compliment when I went out today. "Did you cut your hair?" "Yes." "Nice." It's not much but I'll take it xD

On a side note, is this what it feels like to fit your gender? Just knowing I look like this instead of a guy with long hair has made me feel different about so many random things today

Our old printer has finally died and I'm coming with little to no knowledge of what to buy next. Our old printer was HP which required proprietary software to use the scanner and also ran the software on startup which all feels a little icky. Everything I've read about HP lately (as well as the quality of this printer TBH) makes me never want to buy from them again.

Just need something cheap and cheerful to print a couple of invoices a month that doesn't connect to the Internet or have AI or whatever other fancy but (for me) unnecessary features printers are doing now.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions :)

All of my IRL friendships are based around activities - we play games together, we volunteer together, etc. When someone moves away and we try to keep the friendship going, it always just sputters out after a few weeks or months. It just seems to devolve into small-talk / catch-ups that neither of us are really interested in (I don't mind small-talk too much, but it can't be 100% of any meaningful relationship).

So: What is the point of a long-distance friendship for two people who have no plans to live locally again? What am I missing?

EDIT: I have close conversations in person that are deep and meaningful, just very rarely over text. Maybe I ought to phone or video call once in a while..

I misread the community name first time I saw it and now I can't get that name out of my head

If the remap is better in every way, why wasn't it just made like that in the factory? What am I missing?

Although the TARDIS is technically a time machine, for most episodes the Doctor could rock up in a bus and it wouldn't change anything.

The most obvious answer for me is Blink, with the conversation on the DVD Easter egg. Very cool use of time travel, and seeing it come together is brilliant.

I'll also add Waters of Mars. It's not really got any time travel in, but I feel like the foreknowledge which shapes the plot just about counts.

What are your favourites and why?

An option for me to buy a house has come up very suddenly and it seemed like a good idea at first - but I look at a mortgage and think "that's 15 years I'll spend paying back, at absolute minimum. Probably more like 25 years" - how can I possibly plan that far in advance?

So, how did you feel about getting a mortgage and seeing such a serious commitment stretch so far into the future? I'm mainly talking about the emotional side of things rather than financial
