Two Geo Guesser type of games I made on the side, out of map data I already had (sopuli.xyz)
 

Two free interactive maps I build on Wikidata, castles and filming locations. The games came after, just for fun, because the data was already there.

Guess the Castle https://thecastlemap.com/guess/ A photo a day out of the 500 most famous castles. Six guesses, distance and direction after each miss. Also an endless mode where the user can play for ever for all 6,412 landmarks.

Guess the Location https://thefilmmap.com/guess/ A film, series, game or anime a day. Tap where you think it was shot. Six guesses, 13,097 real locations on the board.

It is free to use, no sign up required and naturally no ads. Every answer is a Wikidata record, so you can check it. Happy to take corrections and feedback.

Hmmmm people like services which are actually better than what Facebook currently offers. Maybe free dating apps, cool games and meet up services could attract new users. Get me a team and some beers and pizza, and I will make new Facebook.

However I will never be able to outcompete META. That is a different story. That is an insane company with the craziest infrastructure.

For some countries I have added a cap of 500 maximum castles because the map will otherwise be filled too much.

I built a free map of sunshine hours for 3,833 places you can fly to (sopuli.xyz)
 

I build free map sites such as Trainrouter, Castlemap and Filmmap. The world sunshine map settles a question I could never answer properly. If I want sun in a particular month, where should I go?

It covers 3,833 destinations in 235 countries. Look up anywhere you are considering and you get its sunniest month, annual sunshine hours, and a month by month breakdown of temperature, rain and UV, plus sea temperature on the coast.

There are no ads and no sign up. It only covers places with an airport, so it is a map of where you can fly rather than every town.

I have a system where I fetch feedback from comments or feedback from internet, where I sometimes do changes on the site and credit the user. https://thefilmmap.com/changelog/

The feedback gets verified before implemented on the site.

Some might not have wikidata yet, so that is an another problem where it needs to get that sortet out. I am also working on making parsing wikidata better and better.

I built this map from open data. Every point is one of 5,793 castles, fortresses, palaces and ruins across 138 countries: 2,591 castles, 1,180 fortresses, 934 palaces and 1,088 ruins. The density is the story. Europe blazes while most of the planet stays dark.

It is a curated atlas, not a complete inventory. Germany alone has an estimated 25,000 castle sites (According to some sources). A landmark makes the map when it has a real photo on Wikimedia Commons, a Wikipedia article and exact coordinates in Wikidata, balanced across countries so the map stays explorable. France leads with 351.

You can explore every one interactively at https://thecastlemap.com/ with photos, founding centuries and short stories, plus a daily Guess the Castle game. There are no ads or sign up, everything CC0 and free to download.

I got tired of searching "where was this filmed" and landing on listicles, so I built the map instead. Search a title to see where it was shot, or search a place to see what was made there.

2,538 locations, 4,214 films and series. It is all built from Wikidata, one statement per pin, so every card links back to the source and you can check me.

It is honest about what it does not know, which no listicle is. 938 productions are recorded only at country level and the page says so. Gladiator is Malta and Morocco and nothing finer. Casablanca resolves to California. It also never claims which scene was shot where, because filming records do not carry that.

430 video games are on there too, placed by where they are set rather than shot, because a game is filmed nowhere.

The world's passenger railways: 1,166 notable train routes on one map (sopuli.xyz)
 

Every notable passenger train route I could verify, drawn on one map with no basemap under it, so the rail lines themselves trace the coastlines. 1,166 routes across 119 countries, about 309,000 km of line once shared corridors are counted once.

Coloured by what kind of journey it is: 459 classic intercity, 246 scenic, 138 heritage, 135 high-speed, 108 night trains, 48 funiculars, 32 luxury cruise trains.

The geometry is the part I have spent the most time on. Route shapes are traced from OpenStreetMap railway relations and ways rather than drawn by hand, so the lines sit on real track. This week I finished a pass that put the last stragglers on their actual alignment, including a Saudi line that turned out to be running 200 km up a branch and back down again.

It is a free hobby project, no ads and no signup, and the route data is open. Corrections are genuinely welcome and get credited; forum readers have already fixed a number of errors in it.

Caveat worth stating plainly: it is a curated atlas of notable routes, not a complete inventory of the world's railways. Somewhere like China or Germany has far more track than the routes shown here.
