Mario Kart World is launching exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025! In Mario Kart World, you can go off the racetrack and drive virtually everywhere!

Race seamlessly across connected roads and racetracks that deliver Mario Kart racing like never before. Participate in the new Knockout Tour mode, where you’ll barrel through back-to-back courses with no pit stops along the way. And in Free Roam mode, it’s possible to go off the racetrack and drive in any direction you wish, explore areas that pique your interest and take some photos at scenic spots with a group of friends.

More details about the game will be shared in an upcoming Mario Kart World Direct on April 17 at 6am PT.

This actually looked really cool. An open world and seamless transition between maps is something I'd never had expected to see from a Mario Kart game.

It looks good but an open world also doesn't feel like Mario Kart to me.

Although at £75 I probably don't need to worry anyway, that's a stretch too far.

$80 for physical is kinda wild tbh

But it does look amazing

This game looks straight gas 🔥

Hmm this game look really good and i'm excited to play it. It has so much features i saw, that i will like for sure. But usually i don't like open world games. So play it like every other is possible right. I'm able to ignore the world mostly and just drive courses?

[–] picandocodigo@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yes, it has the classic Grand Prix mode. And Knockout Tour appears to be similar too, just with a new checkpoint mechanic. The "open world" mechanic is probably just limited to the Free Roam mode.

I think the new checkpoint mechanic could be nice.

Some of the other race modes do involve "getting to" the next track. But if you think about it as just being a point to point race between each circuit race, then it's not really "open world" per se.

That looks great. I hope we get to lay out custom courses within the world, too!

But I can't ignore how they decided to fill out the roster. Mario Kart 8 opened the door for guest characters and now we get a cow? And a penguin? And a generic enemy from 3D World whose name I don't even know?

[–] Tarquinn2049@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

My sister is so excited for the cow. Not enough games let you play as an adorable cow.

[–] picandocodigo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I like that they kept it in the Mario universe instead of going full "Smash" and just getting all the Nintendo characters in there. Also, I really look forward to playing as a cow!

Charge N Chuck is from Super Mario World on the SNES and is far from generic.

[–] sdcSpade@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 year ago

Chuck is a lot of things, "not the character I was talking about" is among them.

But I've seen more of the roster since the reveal and if they're going all in adding 40 random dudes from all over the series, then I'm actually okay with it. On that scale it's the good kind of stupid that I can enjoy.

It looks amazing, can’t wait to buy it second hand in 2-3 years

making a mental note to source this ethically when the Switch 2 emulator comes out 😇
