Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

It ain't his money, it's the people of Texas' money, and they keep electing these racist scumbags, so I guess it's worth it to them to just piss their taxes up a wall, to virtue singal

[–] WhatIsThePointAnyway@lemmy.world 52 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Many vote red but it is also all the barriers they put in the way for democratic voters. This is a deeply corrupt state.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, it's probably the most gerrymandered state in the entire country and that's fucking SAYING something!

The simple fact that Ted Cruz keeps getting reelected in spite of being almost universally despised should tell you all you need about the state of representative democracy in Texas..

[–] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ted Cruz wins a statewide election it can't be gerrymandered.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I was using "gerrymandered" as a synecdoche for general election tampering and ratfucking, not in the literal sense of drawing districts.

Sorry if I wasn't being clear enough 🙂

Sign a kyne a dodie chodie?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It means to use one in place of the whole (or the other way around). Like how sailors are called hands, cattle are heads, and most Republicans are dicks.

I love that channel! Who would have thought that Taylor Swift is pronounced "Todd Swanson"? 😂

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

synecdoche

Today I learned a new word. Thanks.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

You're very welcome 🙂

Watch the movie "Syndecoche NY"

[–] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 68 points 1 year ago

Should have spent that money on their shitbird electrical grid.

Greg Abbott is a little piss baby.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 51 points 1 year ago

Yeah, they love sending them to Denver in the middle of the night during cold winters. They’ve been asked to drop them off during the day, but that wouldn’t be cruel, you know. We welcome our guests, and I will continue to knit and donate scarves for them. Fuck Texas.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 49 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Thats $1841.67 per Migrant.

Not counting legal fees incurred by retaliation from the migrants.

[–] subignition@fedia.io 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

so an empathetic government could have actually just handed them all relief checks a la COVID

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Or ironically just let them be so they don't cost taxpayers money, something Repugnantcans claim to care about.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 14 points 1 year ago

I prefer repuglicunts, but yours works too.

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 3 points 1 year ago

If you're going to quote, might as well make it worse:

"By comparison, a bus ticket to New York costs about $215, while a flight costs about $350," he highlighted. "It would have WAY cheaper to just give migrants money for tickets. Abbott's effort not only made it a political stunt, it lined a contractor's pocket."

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's a MUCH better use of My Taxpayer Dollars then Feeding STARVING AMERICAN CHILDREN!

So, its funny. I remember another statewide leader taking a historic bus trip with a group of immigrants.

Bernie Sanders Heads to Canada for Affordable Insulin: The senator took people with diabetes on a bus trip across the border to dramatize high prices in the U.S. that he attributes to corporate greed.

Pharmacies just on the other side of the US/Mexico border are selling the exact same prescription drugs as those available in Texas pharmacies at drastically reduced prices, entirely thanks to the cartelized nature of domestic pharmaceutical prices. While it is not illegal to buy these drugs for personal use and transport them across the border, it is illegal to buy them and bring them across the border for sale.

When you think about what a guy like Greg Abbott is doing, when he rounds up a bunch of "illegal immigrants" and buses them around the country, its worth considering what does and does not constitute as crime.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

at drastically reduced prices

They're not reduced prices. They're normal prices. The cost for insulin in the US is bloated and excessive beyond all comprehension. Framing it as a reduced or discount price in Mexico feeds into the idea that the US prices are somehow reasonable or normal. They are not.

[–] nomous@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just a fun reminder that Cuba has a lung cancer vaccine that costs like $1 per shot.

I feel like healthcare costs could be a real catalyst for left-policies in the U.S but the Healthcare Industry is going to fight it every step of the way.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Is the WHO like a medical UN or ICC? Like third party org with some neutrality/impartiality that could "absorb" and evaluate this drug, solely from a medical and not political lens? Do we have that type of org in the world for pure scientific breakthrough that is trapped in otherwise difficult countries or between political feuds?

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 31 points 1 year ago

Fucking monster.

Though there is some schadenfreude to be had that he managed to actually get the attention he wanted from this only for his colleages in congress to spike the biggest gift of an immigration bill they could have ever hoped for at the behest of their orange toddler-in-chief.

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago

And Republican Texans will gobble it up and see no real problem with it, because it hurts the people they dont like. He could bankrupt the state and Republicans would be okay with it if it was in the name of hurting people they don't like

His citizens freeze to death during the winter and overheat during the summer, but whatever lets bus people 2000 miles away as a stunt. Or you could build apt buildings to house them in...this guy is the worst

[–] Krono@lemmy.today 26 points 1 year ago

Gov. Fascism on Wheels giving $2k government handouts to a bunch of migrants lmao.

It would be actually funny, but these desperate people are being treated like subhuman political pawns.

It seems like the entire immigration system keeps getting more cruel over the years. And now Dems are pushing a far-right immigration bill, and Trump is advocating for a final solution for 12 million people.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Think of how many gun sanctuaries they could have built with that money.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

they could've built more than 2 Cop Cities

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

Human trafficking*

It's not "migrant bussing" it's fuckin blatant human trafficking.

Call it what it is and hold this piece of shit accountable.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 13 points 1 year ago

Worst coyotes ever.

[–] dubya43@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Politically I’d argue it did get some democrats to wake up to the issue, maybe not to the extent most would like though. This could’ve been “solved” with Senator Lankford’s bill, but Trump had to … Trump I guess. Hopefully this is resolved soon in some way or another after the election.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

This shit is enraging
