Summary

ICE admitted it mistakenly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia—despite his legal protection from removal—to El Salvador’s brutal CECOT prison.

A Maryland judge had barred his deportation due to gang threats in El Salvador.

The Trump administration claims it can't intervene since he’s no longer in U.S. custody.

His family is suing to compel his return. The administration also deported over 200 Venezuelans using emergency powers, some without criminal records, sparking legal challenges and criticism of its use of the Alien Enemies Act.

Fourteenth amendment? What's that?

[–] Tot@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

~~Can't~~ won't

Trump admin: what’s the rush? He’s not going anywhere.

[–] Squorlple@lemmy.world 131 points 1 week ago (2 children)

“Accidentally”. The cruelty is the point.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 52 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Also, "can't" is bullshit, they just don't want to

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

Probably if they bring him back it’s easier for him to sue them for illegally deporting him. So best for them to just leave him there.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

Accidentally on purpose.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 72 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bullshit they can't get them back. They're paying for their detention there. Which means they're still in control of it. El Salvador wants more business, and they aren't stupid. They'd send one back to keep Trump sending them hundreds.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, this framing is all wrong. It portrays Trump's regime as incompetent, but the reality is that they're just lying. "Oops, soo sorry, it's out of our hands!"

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's also super dangerous to let them get away with. These guys were fast deported with no due process. If they can do it to them, they can do it to anyone, no matter their citizenship.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 7 points 1 week ago

“I’m an American citizen” they plead as they being thrown into the back of the ICE van.

ICE does not care.

Narrator “They were indeed an American citizen. Born and raised in America.”

When criminals are running the country the definition of criminals is meaningless.

However ‘criminals’ in quotes as used by Fox News is probably alt-speak for hispanics and anyone else they don’t want in the US.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

'criminals' is generally alt-speak for 'undesirables'

[–] oxysis@lemm.ee 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

And by undesirables they mean race, sexuality and gender identities minorities, disabled, anyone who votes democrat, anyone who flips parties, the poor, homeless people.

The only people who will be safe are rich or middle class white cis gender heterosexual people.

[–] Photuris@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m a white middle class cis gender heterosexual person, and I don’t feel safe at all.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 7 points 1 week ago

Every service you depend on is being cut, and wealth extraction of the middle class is going into high gear to make the upper class richer. No reason to feel safe.

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That’s your problem, you feel. Please stop being such a pussy and just follow what you’re told on Fox News.

[–] gabbath@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I think they're saying they also feel threatened by this administration, despite not ticking any of the boxes that would make them "undesirable" to the regime. And they have good reason to feel this way. Nobody's really safe in fascism except for the people doing the fascism.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Even the last group won't be safe if they protest or get on Trump's bad side. Which doesn't give them an excuse not to protest

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 69 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If only this could’ve been avoided.

If only there were some sort of “due procedure” where facts could be presented as “evidently” in some sort of “room of law” and sort some of “evaluator person” could come up with a “deciding” on what to do with an accused person.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 45 points 1 week ago

The US interferes with foreign custody regularly, both through legal and illegal channels. The judge will only accept the excuse if he's dumb.

[–] Shawdow194@fedia.io 33 points 1 week ago

The Trump administration accidentally sent a Salvadorian immigrant to a notorious Salvadorian prison and says it can’t do anything to get him back.

You mean illegally

[–] painfulasterisk1@lemmy.ml 32 points 1 week ago

Welp, I guess USA will need to give the illegal immigrant Elon Musk in exchange.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

~~can't get him back~~ don't care in the slightest

[–] Absaroka@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

"Accidentally"

This is THE argument/example for the need of due process with these round-ups.

[–] SSNs4evr@leminal.space 21 points 1 week ago

Bad headline...should read, "doesn't care to do anything, with regard to getting him back."

[–] jerryh100@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Oh, so that OnlyFans lady who took the plane paid by tax payers’ money had no seat for him?

[–] UnsavoryMollusk@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I feel completely out of the loop on that one

[–] jerryh100@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] CmdrShepard42@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

The sad part is that the last "joke" with the emojis isn't a joke at all. That's really what they messaged after the strike.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 14 points 1 week ago

They're saying they can't be forced by any US authority to bring him back.

They could just ask El Salvador to release him. But they won't.

[–] joel_feila@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Ok they can't bring him back because he is not under us custody. So they daying they can't bring anyone back!

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

And El Salvador isn’t saying or doing anything to help… why?

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

Because Trump is paying them not to

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago

Because "once you enter you never leave". You can argue that prison is a necessary evil, but you can't argue it's not evil

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

"No take-backs. They're ours now."
