An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

https://dullmensclub.com/

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

But think of the teak you'll have when you're done. Why, you could leave that on a shelf in your shop for ages thinking about what to do with it!

Too real 😅

Sorry, but the 'why' and 'what' of these boards is fascinating. What are they from?

The actual work belongs here though.

[–] ElderReflections@fedia.io 29 points 11 months ago (3 children)

The guy I got them from said he'd pulled them up from an old church. Admittedly less dull, but the weeks I've spent working on these have been painful

What kind of crime did you commit or bet did you lose, that you're being punished so?

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 3 points 11 months ago

Audiobooks? Podcast?

[–] Olap@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

Pretty sure these are floor boards for parquet style flooring. Very typicallyin older workshops

Are you aware that bitumen glue (if old enough) could contain up to 30% asbestos fibres?

Yes, top advice. These are clear, but I still don't like to take chances with old things from unknown sources. Always rubber up!

[–] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Well, he's not going to eat it and he's not sanding the floor. Wouldn't any fibers be encased in the bitumen and impossible to inhale?

[–] 5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

No, it’s by far not as dangerous as asbestos insulation, but even breaking up dried bitumen glue containing asbestos is potentially dangerous and calls for PPE like disposable overalls and ffp3 respirators.

Ok, fair enough. Might as well, OP.

There's a fine line between "artisanal" and "insanity". Post the end result when you're done so we can judge for ourselves 😁👍

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Well, can we see some of the boards before and after scraping?

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Nota good fit for the sub. They’d have to share it elsewhere, I’m afraid.

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 2 points 11 months ago

Why, not dull enough? Some people's photos can make anything dull btw

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

Just under sixty-seven hours left and you’re done!

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

I'd say use a planer, but that would make a mess of the blades.

Yikes, you have more patience than I do.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Resistance is futile.

[–] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 months ago

Teak birdhouses! Teak shelving! Teak veneering for a small table?

[–] superkret@feddit.org 3 points 11 months ago
[–] OhNoMoreLemmy@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 months ago

There's solvents that will at least soften, if not remove bitumen, and WD-40 can be used in a pinch.

Maybe try some of that if you've not finished already?
