As I understand it to be, these guys are off duty and have no guns in their holsters and they're getting paid by tesla. That's how it usually works but I bet these cheques are signed by the feds.

If Pepycito is right, they might be employed as police officers, but they're not currently working as officers. I'm no expert on US law, so I don't know if that actually counts as impersonation, but knowing the US it proposal doesn't matter since it wouldn't be enforced anyway.

In the US, they are always cops, on duty or off. That's why lots of places like hiring them for security. They can instantly arrest people, justified or not, and can often carry a gun where other people are not allowed to.
We have nothing resembling actual enforcement of law here.
I'm in Canada, I don't know how it works other places. Here's a police services hiring board if you're interested.

Where I am, you can hire off duty officers as security. They're just security guards in a police uniform. Maybe these guys are the new Stasi idk

No you cut the funding that goes to poor people, so when they start to revolt, you can use that savings to help fund your security to protect you from the angry poor people, and spend more on security then you would have spent just keeping the poor people happy.

If tax money is going to cops, they might as well be doing the job of a protest but more effectively.
I'd rather they not be used to defend billionaires. If this is what they spend their time doing then we could save some money in the budget by firing them.
