The new leader will replace Trudeau as PM; he said he'd step down as PM once the leader is elected. It's just that the same day this happens, parliament will come back in session and almost certainly bring this new government down in a vote of non-confidence. The new leader will stay PM over the course of the campaign period.
Edit: The new government being voted down isn't as much of a certainty. The NDP have walked back their promise to do so; not sure about the Bloc. Either one could prop up the Liberals.
...and if Carney wins, he'll be PM but not an MP. The last time the PM was not a MP, it was John Turner. That was after Justin's father Pierre resigned. History is repeating.
The LPC lost badly under Turner in the next election - Cross your fingers.
The polls have clearly shown that Carney as the perceived front runner is crushing the conservatives lead
I don't know if they'll force a general election right away, but it would be wise for Carney to seek a mandate.

No not a requirement, he can be PM without a seat - but it’s very unusual. There will be a general election called soon. He’ll get a seat.
The new PM will call an election before giving any party the chance to vote them down.
I don't see what they would gain by doing that. The slim chance of staying in government until the fall is super valuable to the Liberals, giving the ability to get the new leader's name out there and to prove that they can handle Trump.
Edit: Yesterday the NDP said that they're no longer committing to bring down the government so I feel like the Liberals have more of a reason not to drop the writ. That being said, Carney said he'd be willing to call an election once he's sworn in. So we'll see
Cause if they don’t the rhetoric from the CPC will be unending. My guess is an election will be called in the next week before March 24. Plus Carney needs a seat in parliament.

Trudeau resigned, there was no vote to replace him, there was a vote for who would replace him.
Who did y'all vote for? I voted Carney because he's the only one I trust to stand up to Krasnov.

I would have ranked Freeland higher too, except Krasnov already hates her, so I don't think she could turn this situationship around.
She has experience dealing with Trump successfully. She would probably be the best choice in that regard IMHO. She also has experience dealing with Russia. Putin and Trump are both afraid of her. She is also smart as hell.
Unfortunately, she does not have a good rep country wide, and too much baggage with the Trudeau government. And sadly, there is a large portion of people in Canada that could not vote for a woman, which is disgusting in this day and age. I think she would make a great leader, but feel she would have zero chance of winning a federal election.

Very sad. I agree. If I thought all we needed was to piss off Krasnov/Putin, I would have ranked her at the top. But we do have to consider keeping Lil pp out of the PM Chair also.
Her Ukraine first BS disqualifies her. That "experience" was a disgrace.

I ranked em the same, but put Freeland in 4. I didn't know you could leave people off the ballot and still have your vote counted!
Yeah, the instructions said you could rank as many or as few as you like. I'm not sure what the effect is of not ranking someone vs ranking them 4th, aside from their internal statistics

Honestly just another reason that ranked choice isn't the best version of electoral reform :P
I didn’t register to vote before IT was too late but I would have voted for Carney too

This is how I feel (and I don't really like Singh anyway). Gould is probably my favourite candidate of the Liberals, but I think Carney is what we need to get us through tough times, so I ranked Carney first.

Agreed, he needs to face much more pressure than Justin Trudeau ever did on the issue. He needs to follow through on what the majority of what the past citizen’s assemblies have recommended and pass it through parliament through multi-party support when he gets elected.
