Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Summary

Donald Trump is poised to impose massive import tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China, effectively raising taxes on U.S. households by an estimated $3,000 annually.

Unlike past tax increases that targeted the wealthy, these tariffs disproportionately impact low- and middle-income workers.

While Trump claims the measures address immigration and fentanyl concerns, experts argue they serve as a revenue source to offset tax cuts for the rich.

Critics contend that Trump's tariffs lack a clear industrial strategy and primarily burden American consumers.

If only this could have been seen coming ... there were really just no warning signs ... I'm tired.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 68 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Exactly, I wasn't so much shocked as I was surprised Harris lost. I mean how can so many people be that dense as to vote for Trump?

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 31 points 1 year ago (8 children)

What gets me is that there were millions who couldn't be bothered to vote against Trump.

imho Biden/Harris shouldn't have had to do anything whatever. People should have just shown up and said 'no' to anotehr Trump term.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Absolutely, being normal should beat a flaming sociopath. But malignant narcissism and sociopathy have become virtues in USA, as the ultimate symbol of freedom. Because they only think of themselves.

Good thing most Americans can find an extra three grand in their couch cushions. /s

That's not for them. Vance left a tip for the couch when he finished.

To be fair, COVID-19 was also a factor in 2020

[–] AHamSandwich@lemmy.world 37 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Though the orange goon's abysmal handling of the situation didn't help.

[–] bluemite@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Most definitely

I thought DOGE saved taxpayer money. Since the cost of government spending is lower, taxes should be lowered. This Trump and Elon are scammers if taxes are not lowered.

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 71 points 1 year ago

Only if you make over 360k a year and above.

It saves it for distribution to billionaires.

He works for Putin. He’s been very successful at following his orders.

[–] commander@lemmings.world 60 points 1 year ago (9 children)

I kept saying this, and I'm glad others are realizing it.

He steamrolled tariffs because it's a tax on the working class. He will never raise taxes for the ruling class.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

At this point I think it's just market manipulation. They are already going back on some of the tariffs.

😂😂😂 Oh boy those MAGA idiots that were complaining about inflation and thought voting for Trump would help them. 🤣🤣🤣
How's that going for you? 🤡🤡🤡

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They'd cut off their nose to spite their face. As long as people they don't like are hurting, they'll suffer as well. They'll probably just find a way to blame Biden or Obama again.

[–] JoShmoe@ani.social 6 points 1 year ago

They won’t actually find a way. They’ll just make up shit that Trump was actually responsible for.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 38 points 1 year ago

Finally someone says what it is.

TARRIFFS ARE A SALES TAX.
TARRIFFS ARE A SALES TAX.
TARRIFFS ARE A SALES TAX.

And every consumer hates a sales tax.

[–] SleepyBear@lemmy.world 29 points 1 year ago (5 children)

If I (someone who makes around $30,000 a year) owes anything CLOSE to 2 grand in federal taxes theyre gonna have to send the IRS after me to collect. 🤷 Sorry dumpy donnie.

[–] pfwood178@sh.itjust.works 52 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You won't see $2k more in Federal Income Tax, you'll pay higher prices on store shelves (because of the tariffs the Federal government collected from the importer of the goods, which ultimately get passed on to you the consumer)

[–] ehxor@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 year ago

I call it “trickle down getting-fucked”

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

And pay $1,540 extr in actual income tax

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The burden is coming in the price of goods you purchase not in a tax that is due.

I wouldn't be surprised if these tax hikes are imposed, then Musk/Trump issue checks with their faces that give 'free money' to everyone in an attempt to curry favor.

If that happens, I will turn that crap into Euros.

[–] hansolo@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't want to give up too many secrets, but....

...the ultimate way to own Libs is to destroy the economy and raise taxes on everyone that voted for you. Ssshhhhhhh....don't tell anyone, them Libs'll be so pissed. ;)

[–] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 year ago

This went into effect today.

I still can't believe Bidenflation is still happening.

Well jokes on you, Republicans will have their tariffs paid for by China, Mexico, and Canada and even better they're going to be getting a stimulus check for 8K thanks to DOGE.

That's what Tik Toc tells them and what they know to be true.

Trump Set to Whack US Working Class With Historic $2,000 Tax Hike

They updated the article FYI.
