Are you kidding me?

President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday ordered a halt to New York City’s congestion pricing system, which thins traffic and funds mass transit by imposing high tolls on drivers entering some parts of Manhattan.

Launched on Jan. 5, the city’s system uses license plate readers to impose a $9 toll on most passenger cars entering Manhattan neighborhoods south of Central Park. In its early days, transit officials say the toll has brought modest but measurable traffic reductions.

Funny how they run on this mythic yesteryear of the fifties... yet neglect the notion that the fifties were funded by the highest wealth taxes, street cars were everywhere, and there were MASSIVE public works projects EVERYWHERE.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 month ago

I don’t get it either, we do it in the UK too.

What authority do the feds have here? More nonsense to demoralize and distract.

The interstate bridges and tunnels that go into New York City are owned and run by the Port Authority, which has federal oversight in addition to oversight from the states of New Jersey and New York.

[–] [email protected] 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What does this have to do with the downtown congestion pricing?

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

The bridges and tunnels are where they collect the tolls for people coming into Manhattan. Also, on the ferries, which are also run by the Port Authority

[–] [email protected] 56 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It sounds like they need to collect the toll right after the tunnel then.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, except the Mayor has committed a bunch of federal crimes and Trump is having them dismissed in exchange for his cooperation.

They're being dismissed without prejudice so they can be refiled at any time.

It's highly unlikely that the Mayor will do anything that's not in Trump's best interest for as long as he is in office.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

The governor needs to dismiss the mayor. She has the power.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

So no authority

Are you sure you’re not talking about the wrong toll? I haven’t been to NYC recently enough so don’t know how they implemented congestion tolls, but that’s different from the tunnel and bridge tolls.

All I can find online is “MTA installed license plate readers around the city”

States rights

To bow to our Republican monarch

[–] [email protected] 55 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

No matter how they spin it, main reason for doing congestion pricing was to fight how slow both emergency response and mass transit was getting.

Literally killing people, rich and poor alike.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

Last time I was in Manhattan, walking to Penn station, I passed an ambulance with lights and sirens trying to get through. 6 blocks later I looked back and saw I was now 2 blocks ahead of it.

Is Move over law applied rigorosly? This question is not intended to discount overbuilt car infrastructure being overused.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Where do you move over to when the whole road is full?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

The bus lane or the bike lane, of course.

...Oh wait, car-supremacist fuckwads have been ripping those out, too.

You know....I kinda think it's time we tell him to pound sand. Fucking seriously, who's going to enforce it? The defunded letter agencies?

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just add it to Mayor Adams's quid pro quo list. Much like I bet he's going to run for governor on the "I'll pardon Trump" platform.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Seems like Adams needs to be Adjusted

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

Probably, then when they don’t they’ll blame those agencies, I’m not sure why else other than to create divide.

Hey NYC drivers, just purposely cause traffic. Sit in your car in the middle of the road - by the tens of thousands. You let him take one thing from you, and you're giving him permission to take everything from you.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

I'm guessing the people dumb enough to drive in NYC are not displeased about what Trump did.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

They're already doing this or may as well be

[–] [email protected] 35 points 1 month ago (4 children)

How is it that he has this power?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 month ago

MTA says he doesn't have that power, and the toll program will continue unless ordered to stop by a court.

Because, so far, we are letting him.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The mayor of NYC is facing corruption charges, and Trump has the power to pardon him. So Mayor Adams is a puppet of Trump.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

This is the dumbest thing.. Why should I have to walk past disgusting vehicles belching exhaust while going nowhere?

We should just ban personal vehicles in Manhattan it makes no sense when this city has the best public transit in the US.. ditch car infrastructure, and build cheap $900 a month apartments that people can sustainably live in.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 1 month ago

States rights, amirite?

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a bummer that New York City has to fund welfare for states that hate them so much, like Kentucky, Mississippi, and Alabama. If that weren't the case it would be much easier to fund transit improvements.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Those states would be worse off if states like NY or CA decided to secede one day, though I’m aware that’s nearly impossible to do. What’s crazy to me is that the states that contribute most are the ones most shitted on for being “too liberal.”

If NY were run by MAGA, I bet the economy would tank and it wouldn’t be able to contribute anything to the states that are already poor.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Everyone says its nearly impossible to do but MAGA keeps doing the impossible. JUST FUCKING SECEDE.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

@FreakinSteve @patacon_pisao
States that are done with President Musk can just stop paying federal taxes, stop accepting federal money, and stop federal taxes from being deducted from the wages of employees in the state. Fire their congressmen and senators. Let's do it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

States don't pay federal taxes. Individuals pay federal taxes. No single individual wants to face prison for not paying their taxes so everyone pays them. NYC banks would have to refused federal court orders to withdraw taxes from individual accounts. State troops would need to defend individuals from federal arrest for non payment of taxes.

This post (understandably, somewhat) glances over cheeto calling himself King when he declared this on twatter

How the FUCK has he the authority to do that?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Isn't Mayor Adams now Trump's bitch because he ordered the corruption chargers dropped?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Yes.

Not only that is that they were filed to be dismissed without prejudice so, if he doesn't cooperate, they can simply refile the charges and throw him in prison.

Totally normal and healthy open corruption

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Federal government has to approve tolls on interstates and Trump revoked the approval given by the previous administration. Though the other poster isn't exactly wrong with the mayor Adams thing. That's probably how they'll ensure the toll booths don't just move 2 ft off the interstate onto city/state property

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 month ago

States rights.

Sure man.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

Finding new lows, eh?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

In a statement, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the federal government has rescinded its approval of the program, calling it “slap in the face to working class Americans and small business owners.”

At first I was wondering when Sean P Diddy Combs was appointed Transportation Secretary. I get that he is accused of sexual assaults which is a great qualification but still......

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

How can he legally interject into what is clearly a local government matter?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes! Trum..err Elon is coming for the DMV! Finally! Maybe it will be an app that sends pictures of me in the shower to the people who make our license plates in prison.

Will they be firing all cops, mailmen and firefighters?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Will they be firing all cops, mailmen and firefighters?

Just the mailmen and firefighters. Without police, who would be around to ~~beat up the minorities and protesters~~ enforce the law?
