Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Could they squeeze it until janaury 21st? Even January 20th actually. It'd be hilarious to see the goverment shut down on inauguration day so Trump's special moment is taken away.

How delusional and petty are people to want this? Peoples lives that live paycheck to paycheck are at stake because of this and you are getting upvoted because you believe that this would somehow affect trumps ego negatively.

You know what actually happens if it shuts down on Inauguration Day? It even more deeply entrenches people’s vote for trump. They will say “look Biden and the democrats couldn’t even keep the country running, good thing Trump is president now”. And guess what, people would still show up, but this time of no one is working in government they will finish the job they started on J6.

I wonder what rights will try to be stripped away to pass this.

[–] DesertHermit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The only drawback is that the inauguration would still go on, with all the people working it unpaid and the price of everything doubled once it's finally tallied up months later. So it would make his special day MORE special in some ways.

I'm expecting Trump will refuse to raise the limit unless he's personally enriched. My personal guess is that at some point in this term he's going to try to take out a large personal loan backed by the US economy. Probably by eliminating the debt ceiling and then just printing money for himself.

I've been wondering if he will try the trillion dollar coin workaround.

Previously, no one's been willing to open that can of worms, but this is Trump we're talking about.

If he mints a trillion dollar coin he's absolutely just going to keep it.

In his pocket. And rub it for luck every time he sends a Truth Social tweet (I refuse to call it what they want me to call it).

The noun to describe a post to any social media platform (even lemmy though I say it with the best intentions) is "diarrhea".

I'm half kidding of course - the post is what you make it and if it's being posted on "truth social" it's never the truth.

Or Elmo will take it and run

[–] DesertHermit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

If Paul Krugman and Rashida Talib ever liked this idea as a workaround for GOP obstructionism, then there's not a high likelihood of it happening once the new Congress is in office on Jan 3.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This again, they'll just raise it

[–] DeadWorldWalking@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They always do, but only after the Neolibs accept the Fascists amendment to chip further away at our rights and freedoms.

No money for schools or medicine, literally infinite money for arms manufacturers.

There's a little momentum at the moment..

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

remember that the debt limit is only a thing so they can hijack legislation with the threat of shutting down the government. there's no other reason to have it if the only way the government can function is by raising it every time.

It's similar to a player dialogue where you just click through every time but the dialogue's still there for a reason.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Again? Yawn. Congress needs to stop pretending they're useful by creating problems and then half-assedly "solving" them. If politicians did their jobs properly, we wouldn't need to spend so much time into learning about the jobs they're supposed to be doing.

Same troll who went around saying inflation is "transitory?" Fuck off Yellen. And take the rest of your dinosaur ilk with you.
