And then the comment section went quiet, as all the russian bots crawled back in the .ml Yandex servers to lower their token amount until the next election.

Sleep tight russian bots.

Reposting my own comment here:

I live somewhere with 2 Republicans on the ballot for one seat with no write in line.

I could have not voted at all on that item, but that wouldn't have helped anybody but the worst of the two candidates.

I poured through more interviews and candidate statements from these two trashy people than any other candidate I voted for, just to find the one that was the least evil.

I still hate them both, but I voted for one to try and stem the bleeding because that's how our Democracy works.

And adding a quote from Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello:

But in any and every contested race, as my mom Mary Morello always said, we have to fight the fascist every which way we can, recognizing that even if there's but an inch of difference between two candidates, there are a lot of vulnerable people who could be greatly harmed in that inch.

Remider that voting in a Democracy is the bare minimum.

Everday citizens can protest, attend town halls, call their elected officials (or their opponents) and make their views heard. You can donate money, and if you can't donate money, you can donate time, and if you can't donate time, you can bring attention to issues that you want to change in your everyday life.

Voting is the most important thing you can do right now, but don't forget the other stuff. Behind every politician is a team, behind that team are supporters, and behind the supporters are voters. You get to choose your level of engagement.

No shame on people that only vote. That's better than 4 out 5 other Americans this year.

We must defeat fascism by any means necessary.

Even if it means voting.

Get rid of the nazi plague. Hunt them down, put them in prison.

God the cynicism in this thread is depressing.

You know why your vote doesn't matter? ....because you talk yourself out of getting of your lazy ass and using your vote.

One single dude seriously spent half a billion on this midterm. He expects a return on that investment... Don't oblige him.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 79 points 4 days ago (10 children)

If our .ml friends could read, they'd be very upset right now.

If both parties weren't controlled by billionaires then they wouldn't be donating to both parties.

Still, I vote anyway because why not? Especially with mail-in voting, it's barely any effort or time.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 57 points 4 days ago (50 children)

If both parties are the same then why is one party trying to do every possible thing to make it difficult for certain groups of legal US citizens to simply vote, let alone challenge every single outcome where they don't win?

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 22 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Well see this guy I know says that its better to not vote because then youre playing into their hand and you should just be an individual, because all campaigns are just a money funnel to see who can make the most money, and the government creates monopolies with corporations so we need to get rid of government and instate a king.

Actual words I heard today. Jfc people be dumb.

Billionaires are spending a fortune in both parties, so that their influence in the lawmaking process is secured. Therefore, this meme falls flat. Vote nevertheless, because your only other option is civil disobedience or all out class war

In California, there’s a billionaire tax proposition to make up for federal health care funding cuts.

Guess which side democratic governor Newsom is on.

This meme would hit harder if billionaires didn't also spend fortunes on influencing democrats. Did you think Newsom blocked the billionaire tax out of the kindness of his own heart? About 60% of aipac funds goes to democrats. You think they're just pissing away their money there?

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 48 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Elon Musk poured an eye-watering amount of money for the Republicans.

More money than Soros ever did which was the Republican boogeyman.

You have to counter that while you have the chance.

Sometimes I think breaking the two party system is the single most necessary thing for the USA. All this back and forth and debate about voting vs not voting and lesser evilism is ridiculous.

How the fuck did it ever get to a situation where you have two parties who both oppose electoral reform but you're afraid to not vote for one of them in case the worse one wins?

This is democracy theater.

It's baffling to me how much billionaires here in California are willing to spend to avoid a one time wealth tax. Like, they're almost spending as much money on ads against prop 40 as they would have paid in the wealth tax itself.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 23 points 4 days ago (6 children)

Because they want to kill the precedent

Of all the things cynical George Carlin was wrong about, he was the wrongest about that.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

True, but he was right about a lot too.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 3 days ago (9 children)

So what am I supposed to make of all the huge billboards, text and phone campaigns, professional advertisements, and pushing by companies like Google telling me to vote?

In many cases the money being spent isn't to influence the outcome, that has already been decided by gerrymandering, and all the other fuckery that goes on. The money is spent to influence the candidate and their actions after winning...

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

That's why they donate to both parties at the same time.

If people who posted this shit spent their time and energy during the primaries telling people it's a dumb fuck decision to be voting for politicians who support genocide and blocking strikes we'd all be a lot better off. Those people are our biggest obstacle. We cannot mount a strategic offense against fascism with these people undermining our efforts in every primary. Regardless of our opinions on the success of third way politics it is time to admit it's lost to Trump twice and something needs to change.

pffft, both the same? no, no, no.

you generally get to pick between an oligarch and a corporatist.

but you should still make a choice. just know that once a country is completely run by oligarchs, there are only two paths: tyranny or revolution.
