It's baffling to me how much billionaires here in California are willing to spend to avoid a one time wealth tax. Like, they're almost spending as much money on ads against prop 40 as they would have paid in the wealth tax itself.
Because they want to kill the precedent
Yeah, I get that, but still... even if it fails there's nothing stopping us from trying again in a couple more years. It's not like it's legal precedent where they can argue in court as to why they shouldn't have to pay their fair share of taxes.
Have you seen 'Murica?
An obsolete document that has been amended repeatedly is now held up as some unchangeable and sacred thing, despite the fact that the dicks who wrote it never intended for it to thus
And' Muricans are lazy. There will be no next time, because someone will just say "it was tried, and it failed" and everyone will just shrug their shoulders, the way they always do
The whole of the US is running on a completely rotten foundation. Their sacred constitution is no more than a fig leaf to hide that the basic rules of this country are not up to the task of providing a stable basis. And their civil religion prevents anyone trying to fix the mess to succeed, because it is akin to blasphemy.
Agreed
Isn't there also a vote for blocking future wealth taxes?
Yes, that's either Prop 41 or Prop 42, I can't remember exactly off the top of my head. If Prop 40 fails we can just try again next time, but if either of those other two pass, they nullify a yes vote on 40 because they change the constitution to prevent new taxes from being levied on wealth.
Hopefully people aren't dumb enough to fall for it, but looking at the news reels, I feel like the propaganda is taking hold in people who would otherwise be in favor of taxing billionaires because they're stoking fears that it opens the floodgates for politicians to come after 401ks and pensions (who honestly gets a pension anymore?)
I've heard hundreds of millions spent in total. One billionaire alone, Sergei Brin, would owe $12b in taxes if this tax passed. The amount he's spending fighting the tax is a tiny fraction of what he'll have to pay if the tax passes.
It gives you an idea of just how insanely rich these people are. It also fully justifies why they should not exist at all. If one man can spend a tiny, insignificant fraction of his net worth to influence governmental policy, and it's the most spent on any political issue ever, it shows how much power that one person wields. Not only is every billionaire a policy failure, a billionaire is an engine for producing policy failures at scale. They need to be destroyed.
They don't want that kind of consciousness in American citizens. it's a long-term investment.
