  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Russia is at war with Germany and Europe in general for the past decade. So far it’s mostly via IT, propaganda. They won’t need tanks when they manage to dissolve society and get traitors in office.

Appeasement never works.

They successfully pushed the AfD - big threat, they are trying to divide the EU because a united EU is much stronger than Russia

How big is the thread of the second strongest army in Ukraine? Not big. The thread of Russian missinformation and propaganda on social media on the other hand is a big problem.

Germans are living in their own special little fantasy world. The comments to this post alone are truly baffling.

Would European Union let Germany alone against Russia? Would Poland let russian army cross their territory? Would russian expect Germany and Ukrain don't unite?

I don't trust Russia would attack.

You’re trying to analyze Russia with logic. And there’s Russian saying to that “One won’t understand Russia with mind” (or intellect).

It made zero sense to let territories occupied since 2014 to be run by banditry rather than make them propaganda projects. It made no sense to invade on full-scale rather than keep funding pro-Russian parties and eventually get another Hungary into EU. It makes absolutely no sense continuing the war. But Russia keeps doing that.

I do believe chance of Russia escalating into EU isn’t big, but it’s not a logical creature, it won’t calculate its chances.

Would Poland let russian army cross their territory?

What a bizarre question. No one is suggesting Russia would start shelling Berlin. Germany is in NATO. If any of the NATO countries are under attack Germany will have to choose between sending troops to help or abandon their allies. Is Germany ready to send their troops to war?

The title of the post is about the threat of Russia toward Germany. How can you read it not as a threat of war in the actual context?

Also, as far as I know, Germany participate with both troops and money in NATO's wars. I am quite sure they would try diplomatic solutions to avoid a war on their ground, but yes, they are likely to send troops to war if NATO is attacked. Only USA have shown they are likely to betray allies.

The direct threat is sabotage, cyberattacks and long range strikes, not Russian tanks attacking across Poland.

Germany has to be prepared for that and for facing Russian troops in battle in different parts of Europe.

And what do you think of it?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I think, given that in recent military exercises Ukraine was absolutely crushing NATO members and based on what I heard from active soldiers, that European countries are vastly unprepared for modern conflict. They still didn't manage to implement any lessons from the war in Ukraine and will need years to do it. Russia knows this and is escalating their threats constantly. A lot of resources and dedicated leadership is needed if we want to prevent war spilling into EU.

[–] peacepath@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I think Europe has began to accept that USA was no longer an ally. The main threat is both USA and Russia pushing for far right parties. Hopefully Europe can resist this pressure.

I would suggest you avoid reading too much Trump's propaganda, if you want to keep your mind clear.

neither of the articles (about russia that i've read in the last few years) seems to be interested in asking even the most existential question: why would there be a conflict in the first place? why the heck does nobody even seem to care about the most fundamental of all questions? what the heck is going on there?
