Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

If I found gold bars. No the fuck I didn’t

I can't believe someone buried 49 gold bars over here!
Where did they even get 43 gold bars in the first place?
Oh well, I better go turn these 38 gold bars in to the police.

[–] PixeIOrange@lemmy.world 116 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Police: o thx for the 13 gold bars!

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 78 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Police: Hey, chief! Someone just handed in 8 gold bars!

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 64 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Police chief to the press: The young man turned in 3 gold bars to us, what an example

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 47 points 1 day ago

Press: Nothing to report.

[–] crypt0cler1c@infosec.pub 66 points 1 day ago

49 gold bars?!? 39 gold bars is a crazy thing to find digging. I wonder how much you get taxed when you find 29 gold bars. Would you report 19 gold bars? If I found 9 gold bars I think at most I'd be able to part with 1 of the 2 gold bars that I found.

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 157 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (11 children)

There is absolutely no way I'd have turned those in.

Edit: I found the article, the lad may have a payout coming to him.

It is now held in Brussels as authorities investigate its legal ownership. Belgian law mandates a five-year waiting period for claimants; afterward, the find could be divided between Kobe and the property owner if no owner comes forward and it's not criminal money.

Probably a lot less suspicious than going to a bank trying to store 49 gold bars

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 2 points 49 minutes ago

Idk, I'd just hide them myself. Sell off a tiny bit at a time, keep working, invest in boring ass shit like index funds and when I get AML'd, I'd have a history of spending less than I earn to show. Hardest part would be finding a vendor to sell the gold to that's reputable and won't send goons to rob me, but also won't hit me with AML. I suspect I have a few options available to me, but since I do not own any gold bars, I have no real way to test my theory.

Hope he gets his due. I cannot fathom the mind that sees Fuck You-money and immediately thinks "oh gosh, I need to give this to a cop!" But I'm sure he meant well.

[–] mr_rusty_shackleford@lemmy.world 99 points 1 day ago (21 children)

Same, but probably difficult to turn $10M in gold into spending money without someone noticing.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Yeah, if I found like a hundred thousand in cash, it wouldn’t get into a bank account, I’d just be buying groceries and retail purchases in cash for a long time, and saving the money I would have spent normally. Maybe asking places to make change so if the serial numbers get noted, things get spread about a bit.

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 78 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

hundred thousand in cash

groceries

In the U.S., that would get you enough food for weeks!

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Seriously. Loaded up on groceries this weekend, and total cost for 1.75 carts was well over $600

I'd keep working my day job and melt them into basic jewelry like rings and crosses and pawn them over time. Say I'm getting them at estate sales or something. Use the cash for day to day purchases, buy used cars, etc. Could probably start flipping other stuff to generate more income/muddy the waters in case anyone does look further into it. Gradually work lesser amounts of cash into my bank account. Wouldn't need to buy anything crazy because I have simple tastes.

He wasn't alone when he found it. It was an entire construction team, building and digging on a municipally owned site which was publicly accessible and almost certainly monitored, if remotely.

There was no conceivable way to keep that find quiet under those circumstances.

So if he did manage to pinch off one, props to him.

I mean... Ten million can buy a LOT of assassins.

while digging

See, this is why it's very important for men, and women, to dig. Wherever you are, home, beach, park, just have a bit of a dig. It's fun and free!

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When I was a little kid, I started digging a hole in my back yard. I only stopped because my dad told me it was compromising the foundation of our house.

At the time, I was convinced I would find triceratops fossils ... Not sure where I got that idea.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Amazing. My brother and I once dug a hole in the backyard that was so deep that our mother bought us a playstation to get us to stop. Children really do yearn for the mines

Pfft, and let the gas company get all the spoils? Even if you don't find gold down there, you might find precious precious gas!

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

7^2 is a very pleasing number.

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is one of those things where it’s probably more hassle than it’s worth to keep them. Like, you can’t really do much with the gold on its own, you’d have to sell it, and you can’t exactly just take it to a pawn shop.

Like, you’d have to go to some big time gold dealer and then they’d be like “yah, cool, where the fuck did you get this? Do you have a bill of purchase? Is there a mark on here from who ever minted it? I’m going to have to tell the authorities about this, don’t want to be liable if it turns out you stole this or obtained it illegally”

Sure you could try and find a less than reputable buyer who won’t ask questions, but now you’re risking getting caught up in some organized crime nonsense assuming you can even find one without pre-existing contacts.

Better just to hand it over and be done with the mess. Hope there is some sort of official reward for doing it. Maybe get some money through doing interviews about it.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Melt it and make a bunch of gold rings. Pawn those a few at a time.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As a bonus, bind the races of Middle Earth to your will.

[–] Furbag@pawb.social 1 points 2 hours ago

Darn it, I hate when the mortal races succumb to temptation!

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Would have to go to thousands of pawnshops to sell off that many rings, and then just hope none of them talk to each other. Or no one looks in to the influx of suspiciously similar gold rings on the second hand market. Then find a plausible excuse for where all the money in your account came from when people start asking questions about it.

Just, a huge legal risk over all.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

You're assuming pawn shops are way more scrupulous than they actually are.

[–] Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Those look like at least 10oz bars, so 49x60,000 each is almost 3 million dollars.

Even if lawyers billed half a million, and you got to keep 1/3rd of it, you would still be up a half million.

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The best lawer in the world can’t fabricate a legitimate chain of ownership or falsify an authentic minting stamp.

[–] joulethief@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

You sure? Gotta call Saul on this

I definitely would’ve absconded with that shit

[–] rbn@sopuli.xyz 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, we can confirm the delivery of 45 gold bars at our police department.

Why the fuck would you give them to authorities?

[–] tjoa@feddit.org 26 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Maybe it’s illegal, it’s vastly different from country to country but last time I checked finding treasure on your own property does not mean you own it 100%. Which i think is crazy but yea.

[–] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I remember when we could "find" treasure currently owned by other civilizations and throw it on a boat, take it home and just claim it was "found". Times change I guess.
