Welcome to Enshittification

A community for everyone who misspelt it as enshitification.

"I the onceler felt sad as I watched them all go, but business is business and business must grow, regardless of crummies in tummies you know."

This is your space to document the decay, demise, and destruction of the tech world as we know it. Share stories, articles, and firsthand experiences that capture the ongoing decline of once-celebrated platforms, services, and companies in the late stage capitalist landscape.

From monopolistic corporate shifts to anti-user updates and the relentless pursuit of profit over quality—if it’s broken, bloated, or just plain bad, it belongs here. We’re here to spotlight the moves that make the tech world worse, one piece of enshittification at a time.

It's like they are trying to create more reasons for people to finally ditch windows and xbox. If they wanted to go all-in on this, they should have done it before Linux gaming got pretty good.

Yeah the self immolation is stunning.

Advertising is the most prolific form of environmental pollution wrought by commerce.

It needs to become as socially acceptable as smoking, and every instance of it must be exhaustively scrutinised and required to be justified.

Advertising is a cancer to society.

You have beautiful nature scenery ruined by billboards. Assholes that drive around town with the electronic billboards as if driving down the street doesn't already look like 90s internet advertising herpes. That's not enough, lets let assholes boat around with an electronic billboard at the beach. Turn on the radio in your car? Fuck you, enjoy all the adverts to listen to one song; oh yeah we bought all the local stations and synced it up so switching channels doesn't help. Turn on your TV, enjoy advertising while you try to get to whatever steaming service you want to watch; only to be greeted with advertising there. Enjoy the product placement in the show you chose to watch because you know you crave adverts. Did you want to read something on our website, well we'll advertise our subscription to you. Check your mail? Here's a pound of adverts for the maybe one or two bills you got; oh and the postal service isn't profitable. Not that it should be, but all that advertising rubbish causes financial strain, and it can't even be used as toilet paper. Anything online is littered with adverts, even then dumpster fires like reddit made a workaround to combat ad-blockers by making stupid bot advertising posts. I'm not telling you what the best pizza place in town is; jog on into the fog. It's even infected appliances. I like my refrigerator as dumb as a box of rocks. Then you get text advertising on top of cold call bullshit. And there's wankers that come to your door to advertise and at the store that try to sell you a phone or internet plan.

MicroSlop can get bent. I will never play a game with advertising.

Sorry for the long rant; but when it comes to advertising all I can think these days is STFU, leave me alone, and let me wipe my ass with these dollar bills instead of buying something.

If our attention spans were shrinking because of constantly being bombarded with attention shifting distractions (which I personally think is nonsense but everyone else seems to believe is indisputable) wouldn't ads be a form of mass violence?

What kind of a weenie patents this shit. It doesn't even deserve to be saved to a "one drive" - should've died the moment someone spoke it aloud in a meeting and the person who spoke it sent to counseling

We need a non profit organization dedicated to patenting this kind of stuff so that other companies can't use it.

[–] Pomal@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago

Or we just collective stop using Microsoft products. Everywhere. General strike against the panopticon.

[–] green_red_black@slrpnk.net 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Have you considered maybe making fewer games on lower quality? Not every game needs to be equivalent to a $200 million CGI fest blockbuster

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 9 points 3 days ago

I don't know what the budget of Factorio and Rimworld was, but they are better than anything that came out of all AAA devs combined in the past decade.

I think I might just join the Amish, the most technically advanced thing they have is a Harmonica. Let’s see how capitalism tries to ruin life when you don’t buy anything.

[–] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Capitalism without the capacity to buy anything or have a meaningful impact on power structures is just called Fuedalism.

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do you think that is going too far? Should we aim for a Serf Rebellion vibe instead?

[–] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah I have been vibe agitating with some fellow serfs, we used to meet in private in dark rooms with no electronics but nowadays we all just converse individually with Claude and meet up in Discord to confirm what we realized we already knew and it is way more efficient!

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I miss when vibe was just a feeling, goon was just an entry level gangster, and Claude was a painter.

I do too, but it is easy enough just to simulate most of that stuff with AI so what could be the harm in getting rid of all that if if our pre-emptive belief AI can just replace it all is founded on unshakable and absolute faith?

The nice thing about this ideology is I can pretend to be cold and rational while behaving like and politically alligning myself with evangelical christian end times crazy cultists, and the confluence of money and power just feels natural and right!

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You don't have to go Amish to recede from the economy, I haven't bought anything new except food and drink for over a month

[–] Chaf@slrpnk.net 5 points 3 days ago

That's the perfect opportunity to push The Day the World Stops Shopping. Really good book, can only recommend it. Reject consumerism and capitalism!

[–] Kwiila@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

There are ecovillages, and other forms of intentional communities. You have the Global Ecovillage Network, Federation of Egalitarian Communities, and the Foundation for Intentional communities.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You don't even need to join a weird religion to reject slop.

[–] manualoverride@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You probably do to avoid it completely. Do you think they’d let me live with them even though I’m a ‘godless heathen’?

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago

My point is you don't have to live with them

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So I get the game for free, right?

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago

I mean, ‘get’. Almost certainly used in their subscription service, don’t you think? So you can ….rent the game, for definitely not free. But there will probably be a second tier that has no ads! …. At first, before just less ads, and then…

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 days ago

They can patent what ever slop they like at this point, I am never going to buy it.

[–] Lavabeing@dice.camp 1 points 3 days ago

Pure speculation, but I 100% expect XBox game pass to start including ad breaks on the paid tier and an even more expensive paid tier free from ads.
