There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

It beeps when it's done.

It beeps when you press the button.

It beeps when you place it on the base.

But today, it beeps no more.

I classify this as a repair.

I did the same with my fan. Fucker beeped when the sleep timer ended

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 76 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (13 children)

That's an insane design choice.

There's a fan here that has a bright blue LED capable of lighting a whole room. That LED shines when the silent mode for the night is activated 🙄

So many electronics insist upon themselves. You're a fan that blows away the fart smells in the bathroom, you are not the star of the show.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean... it depends how bad the fart smells are

At first I loved the blue LEDs when they showed up in the early 2000 but I've grown to hate them. Why can't a soft green or red be used.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (4 children)

And why do they have to shine with the power of industrial lasers??

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Halfass Life Pro Tip: If it's one of the larger standardized discreet LEDs, you can sandpaper over the plastic to diffuse the light, helping spread the light more evenly around and not so much shining in one direction like a laser.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I tried that. It helps but not enough. Not even fucking electrical tape holds that fucking plasma beam at bay.

I hate that modern appliances beep constantly. Whatever happened to giving a shit about being annoying or not? Old appliances would beep or ding once. If you're the idiot and leave something sitting forever that's on you. I would rather have my food get cold than my microwave beep every five seconds indefinitely. Sometimes finishing up a task that is going to take 20 more seconds is the right thing to do, stop aggressively beeping at me.

My friend just bought a toaster that plays a tune when it’s done.

A toaster. That needs to tell you when it’s done.

[–] probable_possum@leminal.space 40 points 1 week ago (4 children)

My toaster just triggers the toast catapult when he's done with his thing. Noise notifies me, toasted bread flies around, what's not to like?

My rice cooker plays twinkle twinkle little star and I always dance to it when it’s done.

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (3 children)

The difference is the rice cooker doesnt have metal parts launching upwards creating a very loud distinct sound that already indicates in the room that the toast is done.

With that said there were some really cool old toasters from like the 1950's that had self toasting where you put the slices in and it automatically drops down and then rises quietly back up when its done. If that one had a small song I could at least understand that.

[–] BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

My cheap rice cooker has a single switch and when it’s done it flips position. That sucker is super loud, and I love how basic it is

Only gripe is that you have to unplug it to turn it off fully, otherwise it’s in “warm” mode

Does it require a Bluetooth connection? Lol I wish that was entirely a joke question

My car has no fewer than five different beeps when starting up. Sometimes it just keeps beeping forever. It did when I went to see it for the first time. I was trying it and stopped at a light, and it just kept beeping. Forever. The sales person had no idea why. I wanted it so badly, it’s pre-spyware car but the beeps were untenable. Spent 20 minutes looking up what the f is up with it. I found an obscure old forum post where someone had complained about the overly sensitive sensors and there’s a secret tiny hidden button that doesn’t feel like a real car button when you press it and it mutes them until you restart the car. I found it, pressed it, and the beeps went away.

I’ve had the car for a decade now and the beeps persist, lest I press the “beepn’t” button, and yknow… that’s alright. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but that’s a hilariously bad design flaw.

This should be a service. And some fancy EU regulation banning ones you can't mute.

Luckily this is a pretty simple thing to diy, at least for a kettle.

If anyone wants to repeat this, but doesn't know how:

  • Unscrew the bottom (if the screws are different, keep track of which goes where)
  • Locate the beeper and...
    • Remove it with a soldering iron
    • Cut its legs off with some kind of clipper
    • If you have neither, wiggle it until the legs break, or carefully rip it off the board
[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

keep track of which goes where

Is it a legit repair if you don't have some parts left over after reassembling? 🤔

Is there no need to replace it with a resistor of equal value?

[–] balgruuf@nord.pub 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don't think piezo buzzers are exactly resistive loads, or that cutting speakers would break appliances either way. My kettle works the same as before, just less annoying.

[–] glibg10b@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I doubt a beeper would be put in series with something important...

I classify this as a repair.

An upgrade, even.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (15 children)

I am so done with kitchen appliances fucking beeping at me. The only beeps I accept is the one to let me know I didn't close the freezer. My stove does not need to beep when it's turned on, beep when a plate is selected, then beep with every step of temperature increase. Don't even get me started on the microwave, when it is done heating, it just keeps beeping forever, LOUDLY.

Like, FUCK YOU I WILL COME WHEN I SO GOD DAMNED PLEASE. One ping only please. Jesus it infuriates me.

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 week ago (7 children)

This seems to be the problem with the tech trend of removing tactile knobs or actual buttons.

Now we have these "touch" screens that can only provide feedback through annoying beeps, because you can't feel them or hear them click anymore.

My electric kettle for example has a lever to press down and start it. No beeps needed, because when it's done you hear the mechanism click off as the lever returns to its off position.

On the other hand my air fryer can get fucked with that one "everything knob". I've accidentally turned it a smidge many times pressing it in to start. This resets all the settings that I have to dial back in and makes me want to yeet the fucker out the window.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

if only they used the same damn knobs they used in the 1980s. what measured analog resistance instead of checking for bumps and shit. there's a damn chip in there, use it to convert the analog to digital. the analog dials have SO MUCH BETTER tactile response.

Next, remove the stupid loud beep from the smoke detectors.

[–] balgruuf@nord.pub 27 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I mostly solved that by not having fires often.

[–] trigg@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I would love if that was enough. My fire-and-spider detecor is very loud.

My water dispenser needs this repair. Beeps a total of six times for a cup of warm water. Come to think of it, most of my appliances need this repair. Can't even throw a frikandel late at night in the airfryer without waking the whole appartment building. And it is called a Ninja?

[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The ninja air fryers are famous for their obnoxious and loud beeps! Friend of mine has one, and I was stunned by how loud it beeps. And it does that at every step of the process: Choosing temperature and time, starting, restarting (after necessary turning over the fried goods), at the end (multiple times then).

Looked it up and found loads of complaints about that problem.

Now do my stupid LG dryer, it beeps out a song thats like a full 40 seconds long

[–] jakobmn@feddit.dk 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I believe our LG washer had a setting to turn that off.

[–] Setiyeti93@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago (9 children)

Yeah but if you turn it off it sends a message to the LG servers to steal even more data!

But now how will you hear that it's done from your neighbour's house or as you're cutting weeds?

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Similar to how people in public places have their phone ringer set to "Hear it from across town"

You can lower the volume of those piezo alarms by putting a 6-32 screw through the hole. It will push on the diaphragm on the inside and muffle the vibrations. You can actually dial in the volume you want by turning the screw just right. Or just kill it with fire

I don't think I'm up for a screw that short

Electric kettle malfunctioning is one of the leading reasons for house fires.

[–] balgruuf@nord.pub 8 points 1 week ago

Is it going to beep like a smoke alarm?

Definitely counts as a repair. Did the same to my microwave although much easier (simply put some tape on the metal bell it has inside).

I know when the microwave is done. It's silent then.
