In japanese it only ask you to keep the toilet clean, thank you.

[–] eru777@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It doesn't say that in Japanese lol. I guess this means the Westerner urinators are the ones that need the extra instruction. In Japanese it just says "thanks for keeping the restroom clean"

Japanese people are culturally conditioned to respond well to politeness and obligation.

Anglos living in Japan are often some flavour of weeaboo.

Thus, each culture gets a message they'll respond well to.

That's delightful

In China, a lot of the urinal signs say "For you, 1 small step forward, for society, 1 big step forward".

The urinals still have a depressing amount of piss under them.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

That’s because urinals are crap at not splashing. In fact, one of the Ig Nobel prize winners this year was a better urinal.

[–] DanWolfstone@leminal.space 6 points 1 week ago

Thanks for that rabbit hole, it was very interesting!

[–] Q@piefed.world 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

According to machine translation:
“Thank you for using the toilet cleanly.”

[–] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

toire kinda means bathroom as well so in this case it's (semi-literal) thanks for using the restroom cleanly.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 3 points 1 week ago

As a Japanese speaker: yep.

[–] kubica@fedia.io 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh no, I forgot my peeing suit and monocle.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Tophats are just a backup in case yo can't make it to the loo in time.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Maaaaaaan. This is spoken like someone who's never had a kidney stone, and needed lasers to be shoved up their urethra, and turned their insides into star wars.

Now when I pee it comes out in 1 stream. Or maybe 6 seperate streams all going different ways. You never know.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Not 6, but 2-3 is the universal experience.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oof, ok I'm getting a glass of water...

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

All joking aside, drinking more water is genuinely the most effective way to prevent kidney stones. Everyone should drink more water.

Also there's something about high concentrations of caffeine and sugar ingested at the same time that correlates with higher occurrences of kidney stones, with energy drinks being the worst offenders.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

For me it was a combination of working in a factory at 135F degrees, and also drinking as much gatoraid as you can imagine you'd want. I'd buy the 24 pack of 32oz bottles. That would last 1-2 days.

Apperently Gatoraid is also very high in salt.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 2 points 1 week ago

It also has something to do with water quality I presume, as I was once in a city I learned had the highest incidence of kidney stones in the country, supposedly.

[–] lath@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

It's always either General Kenobi or General Grievous with you, huh?

[–] Deconceptualist@leminal.space 6 points 1 week ago

I wield my porksaber with grace and accuracy in all matters, thankyouverymuch.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 2 points 1 week ago

I always do. Unless other me is sleepwalking, you don't even want to know.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 6 points 1 week ago

This is the most Japanese thing I've ever seen.

Moral reminders can apparently be very effective. I'm reminded of a couple of experiments performed at a university on the university students in a lab where they tested what changes would make students cheat more or less.

In one experiment, university students were asked to sign a copy of the school's honor code before a test, and cheating went down. This, despite the fact that that particular university didn't have an official honor code.

Another example was that students were given one of two tasks before taking a test. In one task, they were asked to recall up to 10 book titles. In the other task, they were asked to recall as many of the 10 commandments as possible. The ones who were asked to recall the 10 commandments cheated less, regardless of their religious beliefs.

So, I suspect that this sign does achieve its intended purpose, to get English speakers to be more careful when peeing.

The Japanese have shame culture down to an art form.

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I am always surprised at work how people manage to get piss not only on the divider but also on top of the urinal. Like that's the most wacky shit ever to me. lol

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That's why I sit. I'll tell you, once you get in your late thirties. Things change.

[–] Heliumfart@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

In my younger years, as a tall fella, the shake off procedure would sometimes cause some drops to land on urinal tops. Now, as time inexorably passes on, I piss with more control.

Why did I automatically think this was in the woman's?

Gotta be the flowers.

[–] BaroqueInMind@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Anyone know where I can get the original to print/laminate/frame around the various restrooms I see across the world? I’m being serious.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

トイレをきれいに使って頂きありがとうございます。 Is the Japanese if you want it for something.

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Which one of those glyphs is the one that means piss

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

None. It literally says thank you for using the toilet cleanly.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

toilet (direct object marker) cleanly (indirect object marker (among other uses)) use (command form) humbly receive (roughly), thanks very much.

"Humbly receive" isn't exactly right, but it's one of the different formal registers we don't really have in English.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What am I supposed to do when Grace is on her break?

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Take your break at the same time, that's when you're supposed to urinate together.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can she hold my hand while I'll tinkle?

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

That's up to you two
