You stay up late because of that, I stay up late because of the anxiety of the upcoming day with exactly these things.

There's a meme in there somewhere ๐Ÿ˜‚

"we're not the same"

I stay up late because AuDHD makes it difficult to switch activities.

I can't get up from bed without it taking 5 hours, nor I can go to sleep without it taking 5 hours.

Everything takes 5 hours

[โ€“] Aqivex@fedinsfw.app 8 points 23 hours ago

Sometimes I do it so hard, it gets too late to sleep, so sleep is cancelled.

Like yester--today.

I find that sleeping early and waking up early and using the early moning time for that to be nicer

[โ€“] 0x0@infosec.pub 5 points 23 hours ago

It is surprising how much more one manages in a day by just waking up earlier instead of going to bed later, even when the hours are the same

[โ€“] inzen@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

While I'm more on the night owl side especially after becoming a parent. The few times in my life when I have woken up before life starts, to witness the sunrise have been amazing.

Am I the only one who read this twice before realizing it's not a grammatically-correct sentence?

[โ€“] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 23 points 1 day ago

I get up at 4 am. Hours of quiet peace to think without distraction.

[โ€“] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 16 points 1 day ago

Hmm, I've never thought about it that way, though I do frequently feel like I need to stay up late cause I didn't have enough me time.

[โ€“] RaoulDuke25@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Also, early morning before anyone wakes up is good too. Especially for gaming.

[โ€“] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

My problem with that is the more or less definitive time at which that ends (when everybody else wakes up). Staying up all night is much more open-ended, and better suits my natural resistance to having to do what the rest of the world expects of me (a resistance which gets stronger the more tired I get).

[โ€“] VoodooAardvark@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

Well said about the justification for preferring late over early, Iโ€™m the same.

[โ€“] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

I would prefer this, but there's too many late night activities that society demands of me.

[โ€“] orenj@leminal.space 1 points 17 hours ago

I also do this because i have crippling insomnia

[โ€“] Stolas@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

Yes! It's so calm and quiet at night. I can think freely and do whatever it is I feel that I may need to.

[โ€“] zloubida@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm more an early morning guy, but for this reason.

[โ€“] Murse@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I've always just blamed it on insomnia, but I wonder if this is part of the root cause.

That and 24 hours just doesn't seem like enough time to accommodate our circadian rhythm... not as in we're too busy to squeeze it all in, but like being conscious for long enough to actually be tired enough to sleep soundly, then do that for a full 8 hours, would take like 32 hours total. Being that we're stuck in a 24 hour cycle, sleep is the easier chunk to sacrifice.

...or mandatory chunk to sacrifice if your insomnia is as bad as mine...

WTB some magic thruster to face against the Earth's rotation, and slow that bitch down by about 25%.

[โ€“] black0ut@pawb.social 8 points 1 day ago

Great news! Our current rocket technology uses the earth's rotation for some "free" extra energy at launch, which is why they all launch in the direction of the rotation. While impossible to perceive, this is already technically slowing down the earth's rotation and making days ever so slightly longer.

[โ€“] jimerson@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I was describing this exact thing to a friend a few weeks ago. My sleep cycle is trying to naturally push forward several hours every day because I've got too much conscious energy for a typical 16/8. 8 hours is a nice amount if sleep, but I need it on a 22/8 cycle instead.

I felt like a crazy person describing it, but now I feel less alone. Thank you stranger.

[โ€“] Murse@slrpnk.net 1 points 17 hours ago

I think it's actually pretty common, just not commonly discussed. I suspect people who are "night owls" and "ugh, not a morning person" are pretty much all dealing with this.

I wonder if any sleep clinic/study folks have looked into this... it'd be a hard hypothesis to test... maybe like the Navy could run an experiment on one of its submarines - iirc they run on a 24 hour operations cycle, but all the lighting is synthetic. Adjusting that and the meal schedule /etc could put them in a unique position to really find the optimal wake-sleep duration and ratio.

/shrug.

[โ€“] vsanth@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Except for me it's waking up really early!

I stay up late cause I work nights and on my days off it's the only time I get to game, lol. I'm a married man, y'all know how it goes. ๐Ÿ˜…

Yes, it was impossible to do anything without staying up early life. It was so Serene, I really could not do what I wanted unless I ruined my sleep first.

In the weird part of the night, yeah,

That's the time I feel alright, yeah.

[โ€“] orenj@leminal.space 2 points 17 hours ago

Why? You're okay just as you are, even if there's an explanation for it

this is just called staying up late.

[โ€“] determinist@kbin.earth 5 points 1 day ago

For me, I get up early, 0400 or so. No one is about then and it's very peaceful. I sit on the step and let the quiet soak into me.

[โ€“] cybervegan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Life-long night owl myself. I always seem to get more awake as it approaches midnight, at least until recently after going on anxiety meds. It's a new experience for me to be yawning and feeling sleepy at 10 or 11PM.

[โ€“] VoodooAardvark@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

I don't tend to stay up late. I tend to wake up very early instead, 3am to 4am is usually a great time to wake up for me.

[โ€“] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah that pretty much describes it

King Krule calls it "sublunary"
