Lefty Memes

7191 readers
44 users here now

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of "ML" (read: Dengist) influence. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, discussion and agitprop/stuff that's better fit for a poster than a meme go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme. Please post agitprop here)

0.5 [Provisional Rule] Try to use alt text or image descriptions to allow for greater accessibility

(Please take a look at our wiki page for the guidelines on how to actually write alternative text!)

We encourage alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.

We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.

When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.

0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms

When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart

  • ofc => OFC
  • af = AF
  • ok => OK
  • lol => LOL
  • bc => BC
  • bs => BS
  • iirc => IIRC
  • cia => CIA
  • nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
  • usa => USA
  • prc => PRC
  • etc.

Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" (read: Dengists) (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

6. Don't irrationally idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

Dude spearheaded the anti-gun movement in California and raised taxes 5 times.

He's far-left by today's standards.

I don't wish death on anyone. I wish their awareness and repentance while they live and breathe. It is rare an ego is strong enough to sit face to face with their actions and truly come to terms with it but I imagine that is what hell is if it exists. The ultimate punishment is healing in that the absolute worst thing that can be done to evil is to transform it into its opposite.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I used to say stuff like that. Now I'm old and I don't care. You know that old saying "I have never wished for a man's death, but I have read certain obituariesries with great pleasure?"

Yeah, that's not me, I wish for certain peoples' deaths all the time,AND read their obituaries with great pleasure.

Lindsey Graham's surprise death made my week!

[–] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think there's far more intriguing outcomes than them dying, particularly having the courage to come to terms with their actions and repenting. Death is like the easiest solution possible.

[–] orioler25@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh yeah, why aren't all fascists dead then?

[–] orioler25@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (9 children)

I think the morality here is fine, but you're ignoring the reality of the harm that these people cause when you act like wishing death upon them is inherently immoral and contradictory to the belief that human beings are capable of and bettered by change.

Whether or not these things are true, these people are not going to change, either because they're dead and the damage is done, or because there is nothing that will force them to stop what they're doing besides that death. You're talking about people who advocate and facilitate genocide on the scale of millions, billions if you recognize the potential harm from climate change and their roles in defending capitalism against climate change mitigation. Yes, I wish death on them, because that cannot continue but will continue so long as this system exists and this system exists to maintain their positions of power. These people want to kill me personally (Charlie Kirk literally advocated for my genocide until his dying breath), and millions of others whom are also justified in prefering them dead over reformed. I don't care about an altruistically "ultimate" punishment, I care about not being killed brutally for no reason at all, and that doesn't require me to sacrifice the ideal that people can change.

Focusing on the idealistic underpinnings of these things exclusively is a tremendous sign of privilege as person who is not immediately affected by the actions that these men committed themselves to. Guess what, they won't repent or recognize their actions, not because of their "weak egos," but because this system privileges them and insulates them from the consequences of their actions and any retribution that may be inflicted on them as a symbolic challenge to this system. These men would rather die than change or lose that privilege, and they're killing on scales our brains can't even actually comprehend for much less than that. To act as though it is a sign of altruism yourself to value moral purity over the practical reality that their violence is only ended through their deaths is much more selfish than you seem to realize. Even further, I don't think you get to pick the ultimate punishment for someone who apparently hasn't threatened you the way they do me or the victims of their genocide. I don't care about punishment at all, but I certainly wouldn't refuse death or violence as a punishment to someone whose entire family was killed by these men, or whose ancestral home was uprooted and poisoned, or whose children have to live scared their entire lives, or who was raped as a child and then publicly shamed for resisting them.

Maybe apply some of that purported empathy to an understanding that the moral purity of some fucking powerful men is not more important than the victims of their violence or the justice they seek. And before you say some other shit about how you know better for the satisfaction of those victims, consider that they may never be able to heal until that desire for punishment is satisfied, and then explain why their healing is less important than these men healing from "evil."

Edit: This guy is a terrific example of how liberals will weaponize "morality" selectively to harm vulnerable groups. This is a person who does not view fascism or systemic violence as a problem, do not take their stance as coming from any genuine place of empathy or desire for the greater good.
