A lot of children's entertainment is body horror... I was recently rewatching Spongebob with my kids, and even that had a bunch of scenes where horrible things happened to the characters.

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Literally the same animators making the same joke

[–] noughtnaut@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean.... Itchy and Scratchy? Tom and Jerry? Wile E. Coyote? This isn't really new.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 26 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

But Itchy and Scratchy was literally a parody of Tom and Jerry poking fun at how central violence was to the humor.

Squidward's toenail 🥲

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I hate you, you know how many years I've spent locking this episode away to protect myself from further trauma.

Sends a shiver down my spine.

The one bonus is it got me to brush my teeth.

I still have nightmares because of this to this day.

[–] mosspiglet@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

I smell something stiiinky!

[–] wabafee@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Interesting while I was a kid watching this scene I don't exactly remember this being that gross. But now I see why.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 73 points 3 days ago (4 children)

The weirdest part of ren and stimpy for me was always the smash cuts to the grossout oil painting-like still frames.

Pure nightmare fuel.

[–] johnyreeferseed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 35 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They were called gross ups

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Thank you. I'd have had to see some of them if i were to look up what they're called.

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Well worth the search, I have been collecting them for years for reaction texts and avatars.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Thank you I hate it.

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Come with me we'll go and see a place called Candied Island ❤️

Loved that. I think spongebob got the idea from them and made it work so well. I miss old animation, real art and soul.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The closeups... yes I can still see them etched in my mind lol. John K was a bodily fluid artisan

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 22 points 3 days ago

They called them "gross-ups" and I love them.

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They were pretty F-ed up to a teenage mind on LSD, or so I'm told.

I grew up in a sheltered environment. I was friends with these guys:

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That show was still pretty wierd.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, he was constantly getting invitations from his neighbor. Not to mention he worked for a phone sex service.

[–] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Isn't this also the show that had the bit where a group of butch women on motorcycles show up and proceed to devour all the carpet in his house (i.e. "munching carpet/rug munching")?

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

That was Cow and Chicken. Those were the “Buffalo Gals” (“won’t you COME OUT tonight” was their refrain if I recall).

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

You’re thinking of Cow & Chicken

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fun fact: Heifer is voiced by Tom Kenny who went on to voice SpongeBob.

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

He was also on the greatest show of all time called "Mr. Show with Bob and David". And went on to become an absolute legendary voice actor. His imdb page is absolutely insane.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

I’ve been needing to watch that, I’ll move it up the list.

Honestly so is that of the guy who did Rocco. Whose credits include among other things the Taco Bell dog and Spyro the Dragon.

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Carlos Alquazari definitely did a lot more things, like reno 911. Hillenbrand was a creative executive on Rocco and went of to create spongebob. And, yes, go immediately and watch mr show. It's not just me saying it, its sooooo many comedians favorite comedy ever. Groundbreaking in so many ways.

Ohh that must be where Austin got his name from then

[–] froh42@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I just remember the one epsiode where Heifer had to sleep in a barn. Next morning he woke up when someone came in to milk the cows, you just saw heifers upper torso, heard a "plop" and then he started looking weirdly and fell over backwards.

I saw that on a weekend on TV during the time when children watch and was wtf did they really just make a heifer had an orgasm because he was milked joke?

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I was just thinking this morning how we all watched "jackass". How are we all this normal?

I was too old but my guess is you tried the stunts and realized your heros are dumb as fuck...? Maybe.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 3 points 3 days ago

I don't know, to me Jackass was always guys being fucking stupid and nothing to admire. Ren & Stimpy was genuine entertainment though

"No sir. I don't like it."

"Call the police."

[–] from_D4rkness@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

yeeaa, the guy that made that is not safe around kids...

My favorite episode is the one where Ren gets split into the two opposite sides of his personality: his evil side, and his indifferent side. I've never seen that episode since and I wonder what ever happened to it. I remember it was pretty dark, which is saying something for Ren and Stimpy.

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My friends and I had our very own "Log". Was a nice piece of firewood that we put a Bud Light six pack holder around it.

Lasted several months and we burned it during the last camping trip that Summer.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The Log Song gets stuck in my head on a regular basis to this day

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Same here. It's better than bad; it's good!
