Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Friendly reminder not to feed the trolls. Just downvote and move on.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 27 points 2 years ago

the beauty of motherjones articles is, they are true journalism so the good trolls avoid the comments

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 111 points 2 years ago (21 children)

Oh cool, so they're mixing their 2008 (racism) and 2016 (sexism) campaign strategies together.

I think you mean far-right trolls punch themselves in the dick by sabotaging their outreach efforts to black voters. Don't let me get in their way.

Part of me wants Harris to pick a gay Hispanic VP just so the right shows their whole ass.

[–] odium@programming.dev 3 points 2 years ago

Pete buttigieg is gay and a possible vp candidate, though not hispanic.

[–] swab148@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Not Hispanic, but Pete Buttigieg is a possibility!

[–] riplin@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago

Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake.

Man its gonna be hard to deny how racist the gop can be.

[–] SuddenDownpour@sh.itjust.works 31 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

This is unironically good for Kamala's chances. The average person in the US is racist, but not racist enough to not to feel second hand embarrassment from such overt comments, which may, ironically, make them a little bit less racist and make them think twice before voting Republican in 2024.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 2 years ago

It also basically make black voters more willing to support her and go to vote.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I know that bullshit appeals to other trolls... but isn't open racism actually counterproductive at this point? Most voters alive today never knew a world where interracial marriage was illegal - and most of us grew up in public schools being exposed to a wide variety of cultures.

[–] solrize@lemmy.world 31 points 2 years ago (3 children)

You might have been around when Obama ran for president. Yes it was an issue, including after he was elected. Long form birth certificate anyone?

[–] MagicShel@programming.dev 21 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Birth certificate? How about when he was hanged in effigy. Multiple times.

[–] importedreality@programming.dev 21 points 2 years ago

I distinctly remember people holding signs of Obama's face pasted on the body of a chimpanzee. Another honorary mention from the campaign was the slogan "keep the white house white".

The racism was so fucking blatant and Republicans expect us to pretend it never happened.

[–] retrospectology@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

Did he not win both terms?

Dems don't lose the next election because the right-wing is racist, they lose when they fail to listen to their base and try to gaslight their constituents. The energy created when young voters, progressives and independents are given a reason to go out and vote smashes any kind of advantage the GOP tries to glean from playing the bigotry cards. Clinton was not that reason.

People need to let go of this idea that Democrats' job is to appeal to the right and be conciliatory. Conservatives don't vote democrat, regardless of how far to the right the Dems go. They only play up the swing voter fantasy to weaken democrats and get neoliberals going off on a wild goose chase for votes they'll never secure while at the same time neglecting and demoralizing their own base.

You thought it was bad for Obama? Buckle up, we're in for a wild ride.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was bad for Barack because he was Black. It was bad for Hillary because she was a woman. Kamala gets the best of both worlds

[–] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

She'll get the whole basket of deplorables - the sexists and the bigots.

[–] EleventhHour@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

quelle surprise!

[–] dragontamer@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

I've accepted the racism and sexist thing as a real risk for Kamala. But I think most Democrats have accepted it too and are coalescing around her.

Here we go people. Buckle up and prepare for a ton of racist and sexist attacks. I assume the Lawyer / Prosecutor experience for Harris will come in handy for this and she'll come up with good Rhetoric / political plan for the situation.

Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for VP could help insulate Kamala from these attacks. A lot of good VP picks actually could help.

[–] odium@programming.dev 25 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Risk? It's great. Racist and sexist people were not gonna vote Democrat anyway. All this is doing is alienating the black and female Republican voter base.

[–] VelvetStorm@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The women who were on the fence won't be swayed by this. If you are a woman and you were even slightly thinking about voting for Trump then you are already so far to the right that nothing i can think of will get you to change your mind.

[–] ASDraptor@lemmy.autism.place 14 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Not the women who were on the fence of voting for Trump but the fence of not voting.

She'll probably win anyway, but we're going to have reams of material by the end of it for the next time R's are feigning ignorance about why everyone thinks they are racist bigots.

[–] banshee@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

Bless their hearts

[–] Silverseren@fedia.io 9 points 2 years ago

I admit, I wasn't expecting them to go as far as using "Colored" as a general insult. Do they seriously think this helps Trump's chances?

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 2 years ago

Racist fucks doing exactly what everyone expected.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

They're not trolls when they're just the mainstream the Republican Party
