Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Anyone who votes AfD would have voted for the N(S)DAP back in the day

[–] Matombo@feddit.org 11 points 18 hours ago

Don't be fouled by "far-right" it's more than that: The AfD is the new Nazi party

Time to raise taxes, take away more parental benefits, and force people to work more hours. Anything to avoid touching the thousands of billions of generational wealth the elite is sitting on in e.g. real estate. Keep up the good work, 3rd biggest economy of the world, you can make it to 10th in a few decades.

And don't ask where that generational wealth comes from or what the companies that wealth was generated by did in the '30s and '40s of the last century!

Don't mess with us, Germany. We already have enough problems, don't screw us up now with this crap.

[–] NoxAstrum@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Oh geez. That's not a great development.

[–] Fusselwurm@feddit.org 46 points 1 day ago (2 children)

All of Germany's problems will become far worse if AfD gets to the levers of power… yet here we are.

In the end it's the same fact-averse inanity we see with Trumpism.

It's due to algorithms. We need to get society off corporatist social media ASAP, and improve labour rights and reduce the inequality. Class consciousness must increase.

As easy as making a U-turn with a ~~US garbage truck~~ Ram 1500 in an Italian village

~~US garbage truck~~

Garbage trucks and firetrucks are pretty much the only trucks in the US usually built on reasonably compact chassis without that useless stupendously long hood in front of the cab.

[–] FleetingTit@feddit.org 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Firetrucks in the US are not built compact. The fire departments regularly argue for larger streets so that they can move their gigantic rigs around faster.

Indeed, but they are a fair bit more compact than regular cargo trucks, because they usually at least have the engine under the cab rather than in front of it.

In general pretty much anything automotive from the USA is over the top wasteful with every resource involved, be it fuel, material, or space.

Fair indeed, I just always try to ridicule those 4-wheeled stinky ego caresses, this time didn’t turn out as well as I wished ;)

You can, just drive to behind.

So exactly like in every other country shifting to the right and far-right. Which is all of them because we don't lve in a fact based society anymore but one where those screaming their lies the loudest (by controlling the media and social emdia platforms) define reality.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 4 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

because we don’t lve in a fact based society anymore

According to Merkel, Minsk 2 was a lie. I also don't believe that Fukushima was the reason to end nuclear energy. The Euro stability was a lie. The promises of prosperity to East Germany were also lies.

A fact based society would solve all problems but the lies run deep and for a long time.

The real news is that the government is doing a really shitty job but itβ€˜s not election season so this poll doesnβ€˜t mean much. Things usually change a lot months before a major elections when all parties are campaigning and voters realize their vote is imminent and will have real consequences.

[–] HumbleExaggeration@feddit.org 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I am so happy that we allowed for unlimited military spending with the change of the Grundgesetz last year. Nothing bad could come from this...

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

That was a one-time exception with a clearly defined number. The way things are going I doubt the current government could get the necessary majority again next year.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 10 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

That was a one-time exception

In a historic vote, the German Bundestag has lifted constitutional restrictions on defense spending

Here we go again...

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The U.S. was supposed to be the Germans here, Germany.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is a poll three years from the next federal election. It is also worth mentioning that the Left and Green parties are gaining support in the polls as well. Also even with these polls, chances are that there is not going to be a coalition with the far right.

Up to three years...

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When are German elections due?

[–] remon@ani.social 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

End of march March 2029 at the latest (federal).

This year in local elections the Nazis could take over one of your 16 states already

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 day ago

At first I thought this was ASDF :(
