I'm very happy to block communities, much less so to block an individual. They've got to be consistently spammy for me to get annoyed enough to block.
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

tankies one i will almost always block if i see thier comment, its never a good comment(its almost whining about the "not far left". only .ml i give benefit of a doubt, due, apparently alot of them have an .ml as a solely techy account and not a political one.
I never block anyone. I just tag people so I know who I'm dealing with the next time I encounter them.
Btw I have you tagged too
Hell yeah
What do you have me tagged as ??
Nothing yet. But I'm sure your paths will cross in the future in some discussion and I will get to judge your whole life and personality based on a few comments and probably get you labelled as someone you're not, because that's how the internet works.
you motherfucker ...!!
I never tried to block anyone because I have the memory of a goldfish when it comes to strangers on the internet. Well, except that guy that replaced all his "th"s with "þ". That was annoying and if he didn't give up on it, get banned, or otherwise disappear I might have learned how to block someone.
Honestly that dude and the person super into dragon sex are actually the best trolls I've met. 100% harmless and it's wild how many people DON'T just hit the block button when they find them annoying. They're like a built in litmus test for whether a Lemmy user is a fully developed adult who can avoid getting entangled in dumb conversations (which apparently you are).
I do recall blocking the thorn guy from my previous account. So that's a downside to establishing a new Lemmy account. All the users I'd blocked are now roaming freely in my feed again.
i blocked everyone in this thread
lalala can't hear you you're blocked
Mostly block people that I think are taking up too much space on my feed
Fair
ive blocked some users who posted the same crap 7 times a day, and the one who uses that weird character to replace every "th"
I only block people who consistently post things I don't want to see or people who spam post the same thing eleventy billion times in different communities.
Personally I've thought about blocking you and violet for the horny posting but it's amusing enough that I haven't yet.
One dude got into a highly uncivil argument about what constitutes "real physics" on a post of a tumblr screenshot with overwrought prose about... (tbh I don't remember now but I'm thinking electromagnetism?) then reported the other user. Don't get me wrong it was bad tumblr prose but like. It's a genre some people like and a staple of tumblr culture which the comm was about.
Anyway I temp banned them both (I think I did accidentally remove too many comments but anyway) because they were having a toddler level squabble with profanity over tumblr poetry. One of them called me some kinda profanity so I permabanned them and they made a post on power tripping mods and pretty much everyone was like "you know we can still dig out the comments AND your DMs and you're kinda just a menace... right? Like I woke up and pretty much everyone had already defended me. Anyway I blocked them and moved on with my life. People need to use the block button more often tbh.
I tried to discuss but now I block tankies at the first sealioning attempt (or similar strategy).
The second I see 2 identical posts by the same user on multiple communities
That is some annoying shit. I think half the reason I get so much engament with my posts is specifically because I don't do that shit.
I'm not gonna just willy nilly block people... already too low userbase, I kinda wanna just see the drama
Like even that user asking weird age gap questions is part of the entertainment lol
But if they start being overtly toxic... yea I'm just gonna block and ignore
I review the posts and either pull the trigger or don't. There have been plenty that I have not. My bar is seing a person with geniune diverse interests who does not always act like a dick.
I mod several communities so I never block people, because I want to see their posts and comments
Apparently, I block to curate a better-than-the-other-place experience, if the 200+ users, 100+ communities, and couple dozen instances I've blocked over the last 2+ yrs are any sign.
Mostly asshats & bots, and a zero-tolerance for hexbear, blahaj, ani/midwest/etc.social, feddit, yiffit, et al., but I'm open to suggestions, as well. 😂
why blahaj ? aren't they mostly a nice queer bunch ?
That's what I read as well, and it sounded like a genuinely lovely place, but after dozens of nearly consecutive user blocks from there, I was compelled to just call it. 🥲🙇🏽♂️
I block the moment I get a hint someone is responding to me in a snarkily asshole way.
I don't mind engagement, but I value my patience and sanity. I don't have all of the time in the world to be in constant word-jousting matches with a no-life.
Originally I didn't like blocking people or communities at all but I've realised the lemmy experience is dramatically improved by blocking idiots.
The thing is lemmy is a relatively small community. If some nutter posts and comments every day they can really shape your impression of the place.
Some users have very little life experience, and depth of understanding, and are just fixated on some single issue. I'm not here to argue with that type of user.
Yesterday I blocked a community just because the single mod didn't understand the problems caused by editorialising titles when posting articles.
Not often. I browse by new all so I can begin the downvote train as early as possible and report stuff.
I tend to label rather than block. But it’s been a while and either I’ve forgotten how or voyager has removed the feature
Blocked
I'm lightning fast the moment I realize someone is only looking to either
- be toxic, or worse
- waste my time, troll me.
For the rest I don't block individuals, nor instances (I can have issue with people, but I don't want to condemn the entire population of their instance).
I never do unless they are a clear scam/troll account. No matter how much i disagree with their opinions, i still want to see it and engage with them, for fear of being the architect of my own echo chamber
Life is too short to deal with assholes and bots. They get blocked very quickly.
When I made this account, I went through the communities and blocked a lot of them. All sports, foreign languages, anime, and furries. All the content I know that I have no interest in.
I only really blocked power users on reddit and lemmy doesn't have those yet. Not the same way gallowboob was.
I feel like accounts like PugJesus, PicardManeuver, and LadyButterfly are doing a pretty hefty chunk of Lemmy posts. I don't dislike any of them (I like how PJ adds little contextual informative notes to their memes and whatnot, Butterfly seems to provide a lot of positivity), but I did add little colored tags to their accounts to help me realize just how many posts were theirs. I don't know how they manage to stay motivated to keep doing all that posting
