Never have and never will because im not a snowflake.
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

ive blocked some users who posted the same crap 7 times a day, and the one who uses that weird character to replace every "th"
Blocked
Been doing this conversation online thing since the mid 80's.
I have never blocked anyone.
People seem to use it all the time since social media became a thing, I always thought it was weird.
Was that because people did not learn to stay anonymous online?
I never do unless they are a clear scam/troll account. No matter how much i disagree with their opinions, i still want to see it and engage with them, for fear of being the architect of my own echo chamber
I never block really
I want to feel good knowing how dumb some people are
The only places where I block are social media where accounts can post AI slop. It's an instant block from me so I never see their BS content again.
I use user tags if someone is just being a blockhead, but I'll block them if they're being harmful running apologetics for some heinous shit or pushing obvious misinformation
I block the entire furry instance
Just some bots. Any human user that needs to be blocked is going to get themselves banned anyway, so they're already going to be spinning up new accounts and instances to keep it going.
Do it sparsingly, if you don't want to create your own little echo chamber.
I do it mostly for bots/shills i've reported.
I'm lightning fast the moment I realize someone is only looking to either
- be toxic, or worse
- waste my time, troll me.
For the rest I don't block individuals, nor instances (I can have issue with people, but I don't want to condemn the entire population of their instance).
I only blocked one person so far, mostly I just tag people instead of blocking them. A lot of times when you get attacked its just somebody super passionately defending whatever it is, or mistaking your innocent question for the opening salvo of bad faith arguments.
If i see a tagged guy causing chaos every time I see them I'd probably block them.
I'd totally understand why someone might block me.
good, because im blocking you
I've only ever had to block spammers on any Lemmy-like platform. Users tend to be cool and I try to give people grace for being awkward and weird because... I'm awkward and weird.
Thats kind of you
i dare someone to block me
Getting blocked isn't the flex you think it is.
I tag first
Yep.
I haven't blocked anyone, but I have people tagged with 🤡 or 💩 if they're a troll, a shill, and ass, etc.
Unlike on Reddit, here you don't actually block someone. You technically mute them for yourself. So muting a bunch of bigots/trolls/spammers etc is a not big a deal.
I've never blocked anyone on Lemmy. I only nlock instances and communities and out of thosr I've only blocked 3
I don't think I've blocked anyone. There are plenty of users I disagree with on one point or another, but I like being exposed to different perspectives. I have to admit, I even like reading a spicy comment section sometimes (and by the up/downvote ratios on some threads, it's clear that other people like reading them, too, even if they wouldn't say so.) I know I'm not the only one breaking out the popcorn when I see a bigot getting torn apart in a comment chain.
If somebody seems to be trolling, I report them. But there seems to be a pattern of some trolls making accounts to spam, getting blocked by mods, and then popping up with a new username, so I don't see much point in blocking individual accounts.
I'm far more likely to block communities. Not because they're upsetting or offensive or anything, but because I either don't care about whatever its topic is, or I don't speak the language it's written in.
I'm not gonna just willy nilly block people... already too low userbase, I kinda wanna just see the drama
Like even that user asking weird age gap questions is part of the entertainment lol
But if they start being overtly toxic... yea I'm just gonna block and ignore
I have never block anyone so sloooowwwwww.
Originally I didn't like blocking people or communities at all but I've realised the lemmy experience is dramatically improved by blocking idiots.
The thing is lemmy is a relatively small community. If some nutter posts and comments every day they can really shape your impression of the place.
Some users have very little life experience, and depth of understanding, and are just fixated on some single issue. I'm not here to argue with that type of user.
Yesterday I blocked a community just because the single mod didn't understand the problems caused by editorialising titles when posting articles.
Not often. I browse by new all so I can begin the downvote train as early as possible and report stuff.
I only ever blocked UniversalMonk and have since unblocked them. Give me the unfiltered firehose of fediverse.
That's not me btw.
It's pointless blocking people if that means they can still see and reply to you. Why even bother?
You can't see them, that's the point. You block users, comms or instances you don't want to see on your timeline.
You don't get to decide what other people want to see on theirs
Strong agree. If blocking also means they can't see your posts or comment on it, then that becomes primarily a way for trolls to attack and block anyone who disagrees with them
Im fairly quick to block, especially if the person is clearly acting with bad intent. Id rather have slow and steady high quality content than mediocre garbage every few seconds. Social media does not consume my life and I lived in the era of forums. I am used to waiting for good content.
Life is too short to deal with assholes and bots. They get blocked very quickly.
When I made this account, I went through the communities and blocked a lot of them. All sports, foreign languages, anime, and furries. All the content I know that I have no interest in.
वाशरूम किदर है
... ښه سفر ولری
Блин 😳
Idiot
I have not really had to block til recently. Esp attention seekers who have just joined and are posting immature crap.
I would say i have blocked at least 5 in the last 2 weeks.
I've only blocked a few accounts mainly for being absolute dipshits or spam bots, most are banned now anyway.
For everything else, you get either a nice tag labeled "clown" or if you're clearly a MAGA chud, "MAGA clown". Several tankies are tagged as such, plus a few I've seen that are possibly anti LGBT+ but have also posted about being LGBT+ so I'm unsure on them.
Basically just don't be a dick or give misinformation and you're pretty much fine with me.
