There is no ethical consumption of her media. People may argue that you could pirate. Yes, you won't be contributing directly to her funds, but you're still giving her the clout.

Making fun of a stranger's appearance by taking a photo of them without their consent is fucking shitty.

[–] brrt@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Making fun of a strangers appearance while lecturing people on ethics. Ironic.

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Neither you or the people upvoting your comment know what irony means.

Edit: I misinterpreted the comment I was responding to. They were referring to OP talking about the ethics of reading Harry Potter while bullying a stranger. That is absolutely ironic.

[–] brrt@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago

Thankfully we have you to explain it to us and provide a more fitting term.

[–] mrbutterscotch@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think he meant the Post and not your comment.

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

Ohhh you're absolutely correct. My bad.

[–] Damaskox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Hmm. If your intention is not to mock someone - not trying to hurt their feelings, I don't see a problem with that.

Humour is a challenging skill. There's always someone who gets offended, even with the smallest hint that may or many not be there.

[–] MrKoyun@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Yes but this doesn't mean make taking stealth pictures of strangers and posting them on the Internet cool. Maybe the person being taken a picture of just doesnt like being taken pictures of. I feel like the userbase of lemmy should understand this.

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Exactly. That's how you get

[–] prex@aussie.zone 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you Lemmy for introducing me to:

[–] Damaskox@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This make me grin!

Is this for real? Real-real?

Gotta take a look at it if I cross paths with this book some day!

[–] MadameBisaster@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I own the first one, just beware Tingle in general writes weird stuff...bellatrix is a motorbike for example...but its fun

[–] Damaskox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago
[–] prex@aussie.zone 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Its part of a series!
I haven't read them tbh but some comments suggested they have at least some literary value & are quite readable - if a bit racey.
Edit: the image is a link.

Don't you give Rowling clout by making Harry Potter memes as well? Even more so than pirating media in silence.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'll go back to liking them when she's dead and can't do more harm.

[–] FancyGreg@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 months ago

Where's an Etsy witch when you need one?

This got me thinking: How is this any different from the ending of the books?

Harry becomes a magic-cop and goes on to uphold the draconian institutions that enforce goblin slavery and Muggle oppression/classism.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Harry Potter and the Burnt Out Wage Slave

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What if I pirate that game that was artificially propped up by transphobe supporters of her and don't tell anyone? That wouldn't give her any clout

Even better: what if I pirate it, hate it, and tell everyone how much it sucks? Surely, that would count as negative clout?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That game does suck. And I'm pretty sure it uses AI generated content, too.

Plus as far as I've read, it's like 80% tutorial and there's hardly any explicit goblin sex scenes!

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 months ago

Is he working at Wandsworth prison?

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 points 2 months ago

😭 Why is this titled like a cringetok 😭😭

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

She's basically Hitler to you guys. Which is fine, and i get why you hate her. But to me, the part I struggle with is why you all loved her stuff in the first place.

[–] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 months ago

10 years olds don't generally have good media literacy, and for many it was their first experience of Modern Fantasy

Plain and simple

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The point is not interacting with her media, so that she does not generate more money, which she uses to make trans lives worse.

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

What do you mean by "her media"? If you mean HP stuff, then just torrent it or whatever. Plenty of ways to circumvent her getting royalties.

If someone desperately needs to have branded HP merch, despite the key person behind it all being anathema to their values, then maybe they should pause for thought.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Torrenting her work keeps it in the zeitgeist, and implicitly encourages others to purchase her media. If we truly want to stop J.K. Rowling from amassing any more wealth, we have to stop consuming her media.

Edit: I'm not sure why the one downvoter downvoted, but if it's because you think it's too hard to just stop consuming Harry Potter media and products, I promise you, it's not

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

She's a billionaire. I doubt she even cares, but who knows. I think there's more a psychological thing at play here. It's clear a lot of people loved her work and feel hurt and betrayed that she became who she is. If she was just some other billionaire that was vocally anti-trans it wouldn't be so painful. As a 'cis male' who was never into her books I can't really relate, but there' a clearly a large community of former fans who it has affected.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I read her books when I was 10 and not even fluent in English yet, so the racist names did not translate, for instance.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

In 'The Left hand of Darkness' there is a part about the road to Rome. If you are on the road to Rome and walk away from Rome you are still on the road to Rome. Rather then the Potter books more people should read the left hand of Darkness.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Or how about a different YA series, not written by an avowed transphobe? People should be supporting the Animorphs show is what I'm saying.

[–] guy@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

I will pirate it, I will watch it and I will probably discuss it with others who have watched it. And simultaneously problematise her views on trans people. 🀷

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm not aware of any boycott of her work that had any meaningful effect. Howard's Legacy sold like fresh cookies.

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It would have sold a lot more copies, possibly double, if it weren't for the boycott.

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Do you have any data supporting that statement?

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

There is no ethical consumption of her media. People may argue that you could pirate. Yes, you won’t be contributing directly to her funds, but you’re still giving her the clout.

Thank you. Yes. Precisely.
