i should but usually don't :D I often end up with not having all the things I needed or too many things I don't need

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Finally an answer I can relate to.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

A little of both. As a mom you get used to doing a mental inventory of what you have and what you need to create meals for everyone while trying to reduce waste

[–] zlatiah@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Wing it

I did worse than wing it actually... half of the groceries I got over the past few weeks were from Too Good To Go, so near-expired food that the grocery store winged-it for me💀

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 5 points 6 days ago

Depending on the store TGTT bags can be amazing or... not so much. One store near me will always include fresh fruit, veg, meats, rolls, cans... another will just hand over a bag with like ten kilos of sliced ham in it.

TGTT with a freezer is a game-changer, though.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 points 6 days ago

Maybe I should check out their grocery options. I've mostly been using Too Good to Go for like a pizza @ $4.

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I usually do our food shop online, however I plan the meals and write down everything we need for the week. If I'm going to the shop then I'll write the list down in the order I'll move through the shop so that i can just work my way down through the list.

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago

Same.

I have a spreadsheet of every meal I've cooked for the last three years, with a meals look-up tab that allows me to filter by cuisine, protein, carb, and then also pulls in the date from the planning sheet so I can see how long it is since I last cooked that meal. Makes weekly meal planning a lot easier, eg: I want a chicken and rice dish that I haven't cooked for at least two months, then a vegetarian pasta dish for next day. No problem!

[–] Canopyflyer@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Grocery list and I take a pen along and mark everything off when it goes into the cart.

Yeah, I'm old.

I'd love to have a database with all my recipes with ingredients and add them at a click of the button. The problem is I have a fairly well stocked kitchen and I still need to go through the list anyway to make sure I'm not buying anything I already have. So having a computerized system really doesn't save me any time.

[–] titter@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I make a menu that includes two breakfasts (6 and 9 am) a lunch (11) and six dinners. I account for what i have and list the rest of the needs. Then i go shopping and add two treats(for snacking or dessert) and two beverages (oj, pop, prebrewed coffee, rtc) and a freezer pizza.

If i have to go back that week for anything, i fucked up.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

two breakfasts

[–] Chev@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago
[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 5 points 6 days ago

I've been eating the same things every day for over a decade. I can manage without list.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

I start with the "buy again" list on the grocery website.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 days ago

In this economic situation, I really need to use grocery list to make my money last till the next month.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

I make a dinner plan for a day or two then walk to the grocery store for ingredients

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 1 points 6 days ago

I make a list between shopping of stuff I realize I should get (eg: peanut butter). When I go, I sometimes just grab stuff that's cheap or appealing.

I also live like 5 minutes away on foot from several grocery stores, so it's not a big deal to go.

[–] HatchetHaro@pawb.social 1 points 6 days ago

I have multiple grocery stores within walking distance so I just wing it.

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today -1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Online order from bed, cost and items always on point.

Then pick up in my car.

People who say: "i wanna shop in person, i like choosing produce in person" really mean they ignorant and are afraid to try new and things.

Its like wiping/cleaning your ass after a shit. One you start you don't stop.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

People who say: "i wanna shop in person, i like choosing produce in person" really mean they ignorant and are afraid to try new and things.

Lol wot?

What new things are you afraid to try if you want to avoid a random person picking unripe/overripe/damaged produce? Most of the time it's fine, but when you want salad tomatoes and get salsa tomatoes instead, you learn not to rely on them.

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 0 points 6 days ago

Lol, ok but that doesn't happen. Think Amazon, you get what you want.

I just want you to cum super mega hard. Don't you wanna cum super mega hard? Because you'll save 2-3hours a week, so you can focus on that super nut.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

But someone shopping in person is much more likely to try new things. When you shop online you're just entering items into a search bar so you're not going to branch out as much obviously. Wheras in person you see something and it catches your eye, there's sale sign, a display or something and boom you get something new.

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 0 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I politely disagree, because in my exp marketing and advertising window pop ups do show up online too so you get exposed to new things.

But in general, I trust you to shop and grow at your own pace and curiosity.

Ie Those who start shopping online, like Amazon, find way more variety vs those who stick to in person Stores.

But hey, you do you. I just hope you cum super mega hard.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What a fucking bizarre way to sign off there.

Also use pop-up blockers.

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 0 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

What a bizarre way to respond to wishing you a healthy dose of your own dopamine. Aka no, you.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago

What aren't bizarre way to respond to wishing you a healthy dose of your own dopamine. Aka no, you.

...huh?

[–] pyrinix@kbin.melroy.org 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

My brother in christ, that's how they sap your money and make you wonder why you're broke. If you work retail, you'll know all of the ways they try getting your money. Impulse sections around the check-out, impulse sections around the displays. Things sticking out for you to buy.

Oh yes, you will indeed buy new things - but then you're broke.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Yes I'm aware how sale tactics work that wasn't really the question of the topic though. Also me getting black grapes cuz I see a sign saying they're a dollar cheaper than the red grapes I was planning to get isn't making me go broke thank you.

[–] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

There’s a store like half a block from my apartment, so I just treat it like an external pantry.

[–] remon@ani.social 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, it's like a 10 minute walk to the next store. Less than 5 mins if you catch the tram. Going shopping is just a 20-30mins round-trip.

I make a list, forget the list, and end up winging it.

[–] elephantium@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I make my list on my phone for exactly this reason.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I forget my phone, which had the list. Or worse:

I have my phone, so I have my list, go to pay: Forgot wallet. 😩

[–] SW42@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I have my wallet when I have my phone. I use contactless payment 95% of the time with my phone.

[–] elephantium@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Oof, that's rough. For me, for whatever reason, I'm very consistent any time I leave my house: Phone, wallet, keys.

I keep a list that is shared/synced with my s/o via a self-hosted KitchenOwl instance. I've been slowly porting my recipes over to it as well. Overall very satisfied and it works well.

[–] mech@feddit.org 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We use a blackboard and chalk in the kitchen and take a photo of it before we go shopping.

like 80% of what I need is repetitive. if I make a list, it's because I'm making a recipe.

Plan meals for a week. Make list of what’s needed. Shop once a week. Rarely eat out. Never delivery.

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 12 points 1 week ago

My family always made a very careful list which was followed when grocery shopping.

Now that I do my own shopping I also make a list, on my phone though. I note down only the very essentials and leave most things open to what I can find whenever I get to shop. For example, I really need eggs and deodorant so I write that, but if I need veg I don't list the type of veg, I just note "veg on special" and make my choice on the spot.
