A year after the state blocked transgender Texans from updating their state IDs, it has collected information on more than 100 people who have tried. Officials won’t say what they’re using the list for.

The state of Texas has continued collecting information on transgender drivers seeking to change the sex listed on their licenses, creating a list of more than 100 people in one year.

According to internal documents The Texas Newsroom obtained through records requests, the Texas Department of Public Safety has amassed a list of 110 people who tried to update their gender between August 2024 and August 2025. Employees with driver's license offices across the state, from El Paso to Paris to Plano, reported the names and license numbers of these people to a special agency email account. Identifying information was redacted from the records released to The Texas Newsroom.

The data was collected after Texas stopped allowing drivers to update the gender on their licenses unless it was to fix a clerical error. It is unclear what the state is doing with this information.

No it's not, it's crystal clear.

While it's unclear how the state plans to enforce the bathroom bill, transgender activist Ry Vazquez told KUT News she was asked to show her ID before using a restroom in the state Capitol earlier this month. Vazquez said she and three other people were then cited with criminal trespassing and banned from the building for a year.

These innovations are brought to you by the party of "small government and freedom."

It always starts with a list.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 hours ago

How did it end up like this?

It was only a list. It was only a list.

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 27 points 6 hours ago (4 children)

We should make a list of people who make lists

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 2 points 2 hours ago

Who lists the listmen?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

But who watches the people making lists of people making lists?

[–] bigfondue@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

There already exists a list of registered republicans

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

Okay, but before that we might want to secure a monopoly on violence.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 18 points 5 hours ago

Honestly by the time a list is being made, it's already far gone. It starts with normalization

When martial law is declared in October, they will be rounded up. Get out of Texas while you still can.

Texas elections are far too locked down for this shit to matter. Look at the municipal results in 2025. Virginia was +15 D. New Jersey was +12 D. The Texas ballot initiatives were - if anything - more conservative than expected. The anti-bail, anti-tax, and anti-transgender measures passed in a landslide.

Anyone predicting a Blue Wave in 2026 for the Gulf Coast is just setting themselves up for another round of Beto O'Rourke sponsored disappointment. Abbott and his cronies are simply too good at bulk disenfranchisement, voter intimidation, and fear-mongering mass media campaigns.

You don't need to declare martial law in a state that's fully captured by a white nationalist cartel.

[–] velindora@lemmy.cafe 2 points 2 hours ago

You have to in order to round them up and set them on fire.

Obedience and ignorance is just so ingrained in their culture.

I remember driving through Houston and seeing billboards for Joel Osteen and ones saying that The Epoch Times is the most reliable news.

Buccees not only exists, but uses styrofoam cups still.

It's a different world, man.

I remember driving through Houston and seeing billboards for Joel Osteen and ones saying that The Epoch Times is the most reliable news.

I mean, most of the billboards in Houston are just ads for plaintiffs attorneys doing truck wreck cases. It isn't as though we took a popular vote on Joel Osteen. I've actually been to one of his services and its amazing how empty that stadium is when its not Christmas. Besides, Osteen's a self-help guru on the liberal end of the American political spectrum. He's preaching business friendly egalitarianism, where everyone's invited to put money in the collection plate. I only wish Houston was fully Osteen pilled. He's the MLP of Texas Evangelicals.

If you want the fire-breathing fascist preacher, go down to Second Baptist Church on Woodway Drive and listen to Ed Young's son spit froth into the mic as he denounces everything from Transgender Athletics to Muslim Illegals to Pokemon Cards. You can shoulder up in between the Cruz clan and Ole Eyepatch Crewnshaw as Texas's O&G tycoons compete to write the Youngs an indulgence check big enough to guarantee them Hummers in Heaven.

It’s a different world, man.

You'll find the same shit out in California or New York, just in different proportions. Gavin Newsom and Kristen Gillibrand are no less evil than Greg Abbott and John Cornyn. They just ptich for a different team.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but what happens in October that leads to martial law?

Ohhh. Using martial law to retain power into and through midterms. I get it. Thank you.

[–] velindora@lemmy.cafe 9 points 5 hours ago

Right. The Republicans are concerned about a midterm flip. The Supreme Court recently casually mentioned Trump could the insurrection act. I think that he will try to play the martial law card regardless of using the insurrection act beforehand but… If he does use it, it’s a guarantee that he will declare martial law.

So, don’t be here in October at the latest.
