Found on Reddit:

I'm a dentist and I can tell you exactly what he likely meant. Slovenia of course was never a part of the USSR but the USSR had largely friendly ties with Yugoslavia, which Slovenia was a part of. And part of that was knowledge exchange in Healthcare between the Soviets and Yugoslavia/Slovenia.

The USSR developed a number of... Interesting... dental techniques independently of the west. To be clear, these techniques DO work, but they are distinctive and a little bizarre to us westerners. So your dentist likely looked in your mouth, saw some of those techniques -- which are occasionally done in the US as well, largely from ex-Soviet/ex-communist dentists -- and made the connection. As for why he asked Slovenia specifically? A lot of Slovenian dentists migrated to the US and brought their know-how over.

And as for why the dentist acted that way, he thought they'd say, "Holy shit! How did you know that?" or "No, but I had a dentist from Slovenia!" and they'd be amazed by the dentist's knowledge.

The dentist had no fallback plan if his amazing guess didn't work, and he didn't know what to do, so it became super awkward.

$10 that OP has a Serbian dentist or spent time there.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

if Serbian dentists are anything like Serbian filmmakers...

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Oof, that's one of those movies you try to forget about.

Dang, I figured he got sucked off through a glory hole in Slovenia once and recognized the tooth and gum line or somthing.....clearly I watch too much porn

I was half hoping the comment would end with undertaker and mankind, but an actual explanation is cool too.

One thing I miss from reddit is the meme accounts. Shittymorph is a hero.

[–] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lemmy is pretty hostile to bit accounts

[–] slappyfuck@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That makes me happy. That kind of stuff was always my least favorite aspect of reddit.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Yep. If I ever saw a long post I'd zip to the end to see if it was worth reading.
However, sometimes when I would scroll back up to read it I'd then think "fuck it" and not read it. Not always, but some.

It just felt tiring to have to try to dodge shitty posts. I'm glad I left reddit, and I'm glad that overly tiring bullshit isn't here.

Wait that wasn't a fake Margot Robbie?

Interesting that the US dentist thinks OP’s dentist asked them if they’ve ever been to Slovenia but then mentions lots of Slovenians came to the US.

Some of these dental techniques are not simply bizzare. A very common example is "Russian Red", a resin used in various contexts, e. g. for filling rooth canals that is notoriously hard to remove and toxic.

From the little bit I read about the techniques, I'm glad my dentist is not soviet or Slovenian

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

This is so weirdly cool.

I wonder if it's the modern equivalent of a hairdresser checking someone's roots and asking "have you been to Turkey lately?"

European health tourism is a thing after all, and my understanding is that the budget option dental work or hair replacement therapy leaves telltale signs of treatment styles that generally come from that nature of procedure.

That, or they found a "Made In Slovenia" sticker on the back of one of your dentures 😂

Just because a dentist in America or Europe charge $5000 vs $500 in other countries doesn’t mean they are a better dentist lol. There’s just different ways of doing things, and of course your local denstist is going to assume their way is the best, or why else would we do it that way?

If anything, they are the regular price and yours are inflated, always other perspectives.

I'm not a dentist (or any sort of medical professional in fact) and I make no such claims. I'm not quite sure where you got that idea.

I'm saying that there may be different techniques that are more prevalent in some parts of the world than others.

I have a general policy. Don’t buy the most expensive anything and don’t buy the cheapest anything. Both are crap. Look for a good value.

I got all my teeth replaced in Mexico. I didn’t go to the cheapest dentist in Mexico tho

My dentist upgrades like every year or two. It's groundbreaking stuff, I'd hate to "go back in time" to sone other dentist.

Like a long time ago they used higher speed drills, like half the pain. Or lately the 3D camera, or low emitting xray, ...

Then there are the materials! Things nowadays just lasts, all my old stuff has like fallen out, the newer (but still oold, like 3 layers of plastic with the big ir dildo) not at all.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah a couple years ago my dentist got an in house cad/CNC mill to be able to create crowns in-house. They were able to replace my chipped crown in an hour and a half, and no 2nd visit

[–] Marduk73@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

When he was working, did you notice a small 4"x4" red booklet in his pocket?

[–] SkabySkalywag@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Hmm. I got dental work done in the UK in the 80s. Guess my US dentist are just too polite to mention the shit show ;)

[–] PixelatedSaturn@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Slovenia! Now on dentistry!

Slovenia was always quite close to the west, so were the dentists. And the prices were never so low, that we would have dentist tourism. Not lower than Italy for instance.

I'm beyond disappointed this is a movie and not a multiple season long tv show
