Reduce the number of rich, you say?

[–] recursive_recursion@piefed.ca 7 points 3 months ago

Bad for the rich, good for everyone else if I then deposit into public services like health care.

You guys don’t need Internet today, right?

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

I was about to say this doesn't make sense, whose router is powered from a USB-C cable...

Then I remembered that I bought cables to go from USB-C to barrel jack so I could plug my modem and router into a single USB power block instead of their individual wall warts.

They make whole building lighting that runs off PoE. I've never seen it deployed, I don't know why one WOULD do such a thing, but it always makes my head spin when I remember it exists.

…I don't know why one WOULD do such a thing…

The biggest reason is that now you don’t have to pay electricians to run cables; you pay low voltage guys who are much cheaper and are probably already running g low voltage cable for network connectivity. In addition, each light can be addressable meaning you can have specific light fixtures do certain things.

Source: I’ve seen it deployed.

Interesting, seems like a big leap of faith for new builds but it makes sense if you assume you'll always have the building, and this technology will always be alive.

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

If the tech is offline (in our case it is) it’ll always be alive. Even if you move out, companies usually don’t take the lighting with them after they Reno a space

Some people set-up their mobile phones as temporarily-permanent hotspots.
And then there was this mobile hotspot that used USB.
