Prior to the Jan 6 Trump Terrorist Overthrow attempt, he was asked multiple times if he intended to have a peaceful transfer of power.

The same types of “he didn’t mean it” and “he’s the president, he can” arguments were used and then bam! He committed treason that day and most days and we all collectively clutched our pearls. Now we’re letting it happen again but in a worse way.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe clutching pearls and SLAMMING people in the media are completely useless.

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

What about when they’re “RIPPED!

[–] atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Actually an order is illegal if it violates a federal statute or the Constitution. The order also cant ignore a court ruling. A president also cant give an order that exceeds the power Congress has delegated. And, the one Trump seems to ignore constantly. A president cant abuse his authority for personal benefit.

Short list of Trumps illegal orders:

Executive Order 14160: Trump’s order to restrict birth right citizenship. A violation of the 14th amendment, and thus, illegal.

Executive Order 13769: First travel ban targeting several countries. Violation of due process and discrimination protections. Illegal.

Trump issued orders to penalize firms like Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, Jenner & Block, and Susman Godfrey. Illegal order, violating the 1st and 5ft amendments.

DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) executive orders. Blocked because DEI programs werent illegal. So the order to target "illegal" DEI programs was just straight up dumb as fuck.

Federal funding freeze. Violates the separation of powers. A president cant withhold money that Congress has appropriated.

Directive to the Election Assistance Commission to change voter registration rules. A president has no constitutional authority to dictate changes to the ECA.

"When the President does it, that means it is not illegal" - Richard Nixon 1977

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Does that make him the legislative or the judicative?

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Unitary executive theory (which gained popularity in Nazi Germany, go figure) they literally claim he is above all and beholden to none. So a king but you can't say you're king in this country because of our countries historic animosity to kings.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 1 points 17 hours ago

So a king but you can't say you're king in this country because of our countries historic animosity to kings.

I think it goes further than that. It takes the cultural tendency to pretend things are great while covering up issues (something that's especially strong with conservatives). Giving king/dictator an intelligent-sounding pseudoscientific name makes it very easy for their base to stop digging right there.

[–] 5714@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 22 hours ago

The king's order might be lawful according to his laws, but not necessarily according to the constitution?

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 4 points 19 hours ago

The US fell back to Renaissance tyrannies in a heartbeat

Do you see that? That's the hallmark of totalitarianism: "this one man is the law".

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 106 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Remember when Nixon said that and it ended his presidency?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago

That's why Fox News was created in the first place. All those Nixon lickers went to work there to set up propaganda for shitheads and after thirty years - BINGO

[–] NichEherVielleicht@feddit.org 46 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Don't worry, they're not. That's not going to happen.

It has been the unironic goal of conservatism to make sure another Nixon won't happen by making their presidents above the law.

Louis XIV: "L'état, c'est moi."

Nixon: "Well, when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal."

Karoline Leavitt: "Your mom did."

If you're talking about the "If the President does it it's not illegal" quote, that came from an interview between Nixon and David Frost which occurred after his presidency was already over.

Pepperidge Farms doesn't remember, following a settlement out of court for an undisclosed amount.

I know that she's just lying and being a piece of shit as usual.

That being said, could you not lie better? Saying that every order the president gives is lawful is such a 5 year old's understanding of how the government works. It's such a naive thing to say.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 67 points 1 day ago (2 children)

These people have the mental acuity of 5 year olds so no. And no offense meant to 5 year olds.

[–] shyguyblue@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're not far off. The majority of my sperm donors siblings didn't finish high school, and are so deep in the MAGA trash, it's embarrassing to call them relatives...

“Quiet piggy”, is a typical type of comment from a petulant 5 year old.

Bagdad Barbie didn't get her job by being smart, that's for sure.

It's even more sinister than that. She is parroting Nazi propaganda written by Carl Schmitt which claims that the ultimate authority for moral and legal decision resides with the 'sovereign leader' and therefore anything that the leader decides is good and legal.

I looked for a first or second degree source to get the exact wording, but they're all paywalled behind academic journals. Behind the Bastards did a set on him

I mean the courts have already determined that several orders the president has given are illegal.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And yet nothing of substance has happened. Fun system we've got eh

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's weird to think I was repeatedly told the US had a system of checks and balances growing up. Another was the supposed inalienable rights, like the fundamental right to free speech. It seems as if everyone has forgotten a few traditional adages over the past year.

are you there yet America? or is there yet another fascist mark you need to pass before you call for a general strike or at least do a "no king" thingy on a weekday?

[–] derry@midwest.social 9 points 1 day ago

"Hi, this is America. We can't come to the phone right now. Leave your name number and country of origin so we can deport you later. K, thx, bye"

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nope, most Americans are too dumb.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There was a post on Reddit a while back where Americans tried to name as many countries on a world map as they could. Quite a few didn't even get the United States in the right location. One person labelled Brazil as the United States and the United States as Canada, Canada and Alaska were Alaska.

Newsmax is in our shitty video rotation on our work TVs. For those that are fortunately unaware, Newsmax is bottom of the barrel conservative propaganda garbage.

They have been milking every last drop out of this video the Democrats put out encouraging service members to ignore unlawful orders as if it's blatant sedition or some sort of call for revolution. It's literally just a reminder for troops to follow the law and the fact that the magasphere is taking it as a political attack is incredibly telling.

I don't know what it is but this woman's dumb face and little smirks of arrogance send me into a fit of rage every time I see her. I would rather look at Trump's dumbass face than hers. I can't wait to never see her again.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's because you know she isn't demented or a sociopath (at least not at the level of der rapist). So she's just literally talking shit all day long and never faces any repercussions for it.

It's a life of disgusting hypocrisy and it's horrifying to watch.
