An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

You might recall the stove in my new house, which works very well but makes the house look like a crematorium.

Well, today I'm out of the hospital where I've been battling osteomyelis since Monday and I feel so much better that I suddenly decided to get the 50 years of caked-on grime and soot off the walls and the cast iron fixtures on a whim. I had been putting off doing this since we bought the house because it looked like a terrible job, and sure enough, it didn't disappoint: as soon as I started, I instantly regretted it.

But after 3 hours of scrubbing the damn thing and mending the period stucco, just look at how glorious it looks! Yes, I'm easily pleased 🙂

Glad you're feeling strong, you're gonna enjoy that clean stove all winter. I think it looks sort of modern and minimalist.

TIL these things can really be called a stove. I always thought the stove is the thing on top, where you cook, and the thing that bakes is always an oven.

I know (wood burning) ovens can also have a stove, but I never knew the whole thing can legitimately be called a stove.

Too pedantic? Should be on topic though.

Anyhow, a beautiful device, pride of the house, and btw very common around here. Does not look like a crematorium at all, just comfy.

For clarity the part you cook on on top is called a range. The part you cook in is called an oven. If they are separate they are referred to as such but if it’s one unit with the oven below the range it’s called a stove.

Why is the cutout in the wall that leads to the stove off-center?

I have no idea 🙂

I suspect the original owner - who also built the house in the 80's - miscalculated a dimension at some point and left it like that after he realized his mistake much too late.

There's also a window in the back room with the handle opening in reverse because the guy cut the mortises in the window frame for a right-hand side mechanism and realized later it was the wrong sided mechanism, but didn't want to reinstall a new frame.
