Just read a long post about many shop spaces in a shopping center in Kona, Hawaii being empty. Rents have gone up, parking has gone astronomical ($14/hr!) when it used to be free, and now tourist numbers are dropping.

Really sucks for Hawaii cause there isn't a lot of other industry besides tourism and I'm sure they'd love to go back to being a self governing sovereign country if they could.

And not just escape tourism. Business travel too.

I may be just small potatoes, but my refusal to take onsite work in the US since the orange menace took office again has meant that 3 people who used to spend ~40% of their time in US hotels, eating at US restaurants, and paying US transportation costs, are now staying in Canada or picking up the pace with EU clients.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 45 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And you can be certain you're not alone. The "fuck usa" vibe is cutting deeper and spreading farther than most of us could have foreseen.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Shit just keeps getting worse down there. Plus they sent the most ridiculous bag of farts as the US ambassador to Canada. This Hoekstra idiot is so foul that he has done more to unite Canadians than anyone except Trump himself. He is a serious contemder for most hated man in Canada.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 week ago

He should be PC leader.

[–] bowreality@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 week ago

I told them right away to not send me to the USA again because I won’t go. I was the only one in the beginning but now I hear it more often. We don’t travel often for work but much less now. US co-workers are now coming up.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

we still have american customers, but fuck if I'm gonna travel down there for work

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 41 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm glad I got all my traveling done to the US in my younger years.

I will never ever go back, not even a quick border cross to do a weekend of shopping.

Fuck America and fuck allllll the Americans that enabled this bullshit.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 week ago

Most of the federal government should be arrested. I question whether Trump legitimately won the election, but even if he didn't, still millions of morons voted for him knowing about all his crimes

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 40 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There are state sanctioned kidnappings in the middle of the day. It's not safe here.

Plus, something like 20-40% of people are proudly pro trump. That's a lot of idiots and selfish turds. They're not all concentrated in Texas and Florida, either. I see a trump flag on one of my regular walks in Brooklyn

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't understand how anyone is still so ignorant as to be in the Untied States if they don't need to be. Do they all have rules-don't-apply-to-me syndrome?

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Anyone who still goes to the U.S. when they don't absolutely have to is either a conscious or subconscious fascism supporter.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even my American friends don't wanna go back lol.

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 week ago

Fack no, I've been in the EU since July and I sincerely do not want to return to that shithole.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Not going to the US isn't the same as just staying home.

We have lots of other places we can choose to go.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's what I never understood in the first place, Canada is huge and has lots to see and do. Why bother going to the USA for vacation.

My friend liked to go to palm springs where its hot and deserty. You can do that in Okanagan BC, heck Metro Vancouver had areas was hitting 35C or higher some weeks.

You've got long beach in Tofino and surf spots, mountain skiing in Vancouver area.

Gorgeous parks all across Canada.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Canada is huge and has lots to see and do. Why bother going to the USA for vacation.

Historically, because the US is a shorter drive for most Canadians than it is to go to another province.

And, of course, there's that old lie that the Americans tell everyone that they are a fun exciting place to be.

they only want our money.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm not boycotting. I'm just not into extreme sports anymore.

[–] LoveCanada@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Its not just casual tourists staying home. I follow real estate prices like condos in the touristy parts of Florida and the market is flooded with sellers and prices are dropping significantly. Realtors are saying they have had condos on the market for four months without a single inquiry because the market is saturated with sellers and no one's coming down to buy. Canadians are fleeing their vacation homes.

[–] Vex_Detrause@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Oh yes. I met a yearly snow birds checking out Mexico hotels and sold their Florida condo.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Despite having lived in Canada for all but one year of my life, I'm just not the right skin color to go down to the States.

[–] LeFantome@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

Sad that this does not even narrow down for me what skin colour you have. Well, I guess I can eliminate one.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago

Now people can't fly in the Untied States even if they want to

[–] mintiefresh@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago (6 children)

It probably doesn't help that the Canadian dollar is quite weak in the US.

But also why go somewhere that is threatening your country's sovereignty ...

And there are so many other places in the world to see anyways.

[–] IndridCold@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It probably doesn’t help that the Canadian dollar is quite weak in the US.

I don't buy this argument.

One year ago the USD was at $1.39. Today it's $1.40.

In 2025 USD peaked at $1.47 in Jan but then dropped to $1.38 by April. The lowest it was for 2025 was in the summer months - as low as $1.35.

If you look at the 2024 season the USD sat around $1.36-1.38 for most of the summer with a dip in Aug to $1.34.

2024 and 2025 really weren't THAT much different during the tourist months.

I don't honestly think a couple of cents is going to make a difference to Snow Birds and vacationers. What does make a difference is a fascist fat fuck saying he's going to turn your homeland into part of the USA and ICE thugs nabbing random people off the street. I'm not going anywhere near that shit even if the USD was sitting at $.50

Our vacation this year could have easily included a jump to the US for a couple days. If we took this trip in 2024 we would have.

[–] mintiefresh@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Yeah, fair enough. A weaker dollar always been a negative about going to the US rather than a recent development.

Our vacation this year was also not in the US and it was nice to go somewhere the CAD was stronger. I guess that would have always been the case.

In any event, I'm not going back for awhile and ICE definitely plays a huge part in that and all that other fascist stuff.

[–] IndridCold@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

ICE is a huge risk for a traveller. They're running as a lawless gang. No accountability.

I want my vacation to be fun but there is a non-zero chance of getting nabbed by ICE in the US. Combine that with the US policy of any idiot can and should own a gun.

The US is a crazy 2nd world shithole and doesn't offer anything worth the risks.

[–] GuyLivingHere@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Just a point of order:

The terms First, Second and Third World were cold war references to the power blocs (Allies, Soviets, unaligned).

If you mean to say backsliding in terms of development, say that.

Third world is an inaccurate description for 'undeveloped' countries.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Third world is an inaccurate description for ‘undeveloped’ countries.

a better description is "shithole".

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's the thing with language it evolves to mean other things. Everyone equates "3rd world l" to mean poorly developed /or dirty/ or destitute, now.

Like the UK uses hoovering to mean vacuuming, because Hoover was the go to brand in them old days.

Just let people use words how they want LOL

[–] GuyLivingHere@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

Well, skibidi 6 7 to you, then.

If we are going to have a conversation about an important topic, we have to use up to date terminology to do so. Third world ain't it. The USA was the fricking anchorpiece of the First World. Calling it third world is just lazy and stupid. I won't stand for it.

[–] IndridCold@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Calling it third world is just lazy and stupid. I won’t stand for it.

Well, good thing I called it a "2nd world shithole" then.

[–] GuyLivingHere@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

That would mean aligned with Russia. So...not exactly wrong any more, I guess? Lol

It probably doesn’t help that the Canadian dollar is quite weak in the US.

and there is a masked SS grabbing people off the streets and randomly detaining tourists. Then the border is fingerprinting and essentially booking every visitor.

What kind of fucking idiot still goes down there?

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

To be fair, people have always visited countries that have draconian laws. People will even willingly visit North Korea. Some gay people are willing to take a risk by vacationing in places where it's illegal to be gay. I personally don't understand it but people do it.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

US ICE and BP are far harsher than NK.

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Has zero to do with the dollar parity. It's always been bad. The world is our oyster, and America is sick and disgusting now.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

I have never paid attention to this. it costs what it costs when I go down there.

well, when I used to. not like I'll be going there again

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Trump is so out of touch with reality, I think he thinks threatening our sovereignty is a compliment

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

there are so many other places in the world to see anyways

Like Mexico! We love our Canadian friends. <3

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You should go on holiday to Greenland - it’s enormous, so plenty to do there.

There is not one Canadian who didn't like the States or its people; however, your President alienated Canada in its first term, and most of us got over it. But for a high-end dignitary holding a grudge and threatening Canada with a military takeover in his second term, that doesn't sit well with Canadians. We were brothers and sisters, we were family before. So in essence, I'm not sure about you folks, but friends and family do not shit on their own. It's like cornering a dog with no place to go; someone is going to get hurt, and changes will be made along the way. Too bad you Yanks are so wrapped up in your 'president', you don't see a storm coming.

I wish I could stay home in canada. Well toronto really. Imma city boy.
