Wait. What? How does that even... I mean. Huh?

Republicans are the stupidest mother fuckers in the world.

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 111 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Vibes-based policy. Republicans hate when people from blue states move to red states, even if they are republicans. They think they bring the liberal stink with them and fuck things up for everyone else.

They'll eat this up, regardless of how little sense it makes.

I mean we kinda do. I moved from a blue state to a red state and man; I didn’t realize how good I had it. Now I want to make things better here.

I have to imagine at least some republicans come to the same conclusion too.

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 33 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's what any demographic shift does. Wealthy republicans carpetbag on occasion too, though not as often. The problems of red states can largely be overcome with personal wealth, so they tend to stay where they're politically comfortable.

Another thing is that blue-staters tend to have more buying power than red-staters, so they get butthurt about being priced out of real estate instead of realizing that their relative poverty is the direct consequence of republican policy. 20 states still have a $7.25 minimum wage, guess which ones.

A common refrain I've heard from Republicans here is "Don't Commie-fornia my Arizona". I could absolutely see them trying to pass something similar.

California should ban drinking bleach.

I think it means Texans will have to purchase one whole New Yorker for each New Yorker who moves to Texas?

[–] riskable@programming.dev 26 points 2 weeks ago

Oh I'm sure there will be discounts of up to 3/5ths on certain classes of individuals.

Yikes, bringing back the slave trade in a whole new way.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

I said tariff! Good day sir!

[–] Geobloke@aussie.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago

Best I can figure out, is that it's a joke, but I'm not sure what the punchline is?

What a stupid fuck he is. Let’s suppose that a wave of people do ‘flee’ New York if they elect Mandani…. Should Texas welcome them with open arms? They would be ‘his type’ of people? What a dumb fucking thing to say….. barring all the rest of the issues with something so dumb…..

If he was smart he would promise them a gun and unlimited medical debt and payment in oil credits or whatever MAGAt people like.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 69 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

It doesn't even make sense. He's just throwing around the word "tariff" because Republican dumbfucks don't know what it means but think it sounds harsh and Trumpy.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 26 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Navy ordered 6 new 60mm guns to shoot tariffs at enemy aircraft.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

It will cost Texans twice as much to buy themselves a New Yorker?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 weeks ago

they never got the cartoons anyway

[–] grue@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I literally exclaimed that aloud to myself upon reading the headline.

[–] BlindFrog@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariff

A tariff or import tax is a duty imposed by a national government, customs territory, or supranational union on imports of goods and is paid by the importer.

Could be a slip that Texas is finally going to secede.

Or his head has seceded from reality, no one rly knows

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Means he's red, mad, and nude, as usual.

[–] papertowels@mander.xyz 38 points 2 weeks ago

The political equivalent of a toddler tantrum.

Like punishing the people who WANT to leave that "socialist hellhole"... LoL clownworld

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Popular MAGA influencer Gunther Eagleman wrote on X: "Good! Now abolish property taxes for us that live here."

Take note: property taxes are part of the wealth taxes that people rightfully clamor for. Property tax is something you pay because of what you own, not what you earn.

If anything, property taxes should be progressive, with brackets, and there should be a progressive "stock ownership" tax, too. (Yes, there would be carve-outs for 401ks and IRAs and similar retirement investments.)

Republicans punishing Republicans

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 16 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

We hear b******* about how if New York raises taxes then some rich people are going to leave and that's supposed to hurt the city somehow. I don't understand that argument but people are making it and let's assume that they have some basis in reasoning to do so.

Except now he's going to make it more expensive for them to go to Texas. So they're more likely to stay in New York even if they're surrounded by socialists. Is that what he really wants to do? Because I think New Yorkers would like that, because then they can tax those rich m************.

bullshit motherfuckers

You can swear on the internet. Especially on Lemmy. There is no algorithm and there are no advertizers here.

You can turn of speech to text censorship. It made me a happier person. IIRC it's buried in the keyboard settings.

As for the threats of tariffing people? Pure nonsense. If he somehow finds a way, he probably opens himself up to litigation. I'd assume discrimination lawsuits or something like that, would ensue.

Talk about tilting at Windmills.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)
[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 39 points 2 weeks ago

It isn't; the Privileges and Immunities clause of the constitution has been interpreted by previous SCOTUS decision to mean that people can move freely between the States without restrictions.

However, reactionaries like Abbott know they have ideological allies in the current SCOTUS who are eager to overturn case law in order to advance their shared conservative project.

[–] riskable@programming.dev 16 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

A tariff on zero dollars is still zero. This means he'll be introducing an unnecessary, job-killing regulation that adds more pointless bureaucracy to Texas's already-extreme tax situation.

So, traditional Republican politics.

It's not just not legal, it's nonsensical. Like, what does it even mean? How would it even be enforced? It's just virtue signaling.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Twelve years later and oh how the turn tables

Gov. Rick Perry announced Monday that he’s hitting the airwaves in California to tout business opportunities in Texas and invite Californians to migrate.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

That's not how that works! That's not how any of this works!

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 5 points 2 weeks ago

You know what to top it off... we'll build a wall on their citizenship paperwork. and we'll build a fabulous ballroom in their houses!

Sorry my buds and I made a bet to take trumps already terrible ideas, and use them in contexts that don't even give an air of making sense.
