I think it's so they don't think of humans as a food source.

NO NOT LIKE THAT

Did your mother not put on a giant human head and wings to feed you as a child?

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

She did, and by the age of 17 I realized it. But it grew on me so I let her teach it to my fiancé when I was older.

I'm sorry but is the 'baby' raven not itself massive?

ETA do they usually hang out in microwaves like this?

[–] jodanlime@midwest.social 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Ravens are pretty big birds. I don't think that's a hatchling but it sure isn't anywhere near an adult.

Had to go and look it up. I'd always thought they were just crows that were a bit differenty but yeah they're like a double-crow, damn lol

Yup, they’re the largest member of the songbird family! Even though the noises they make aren’t very melodic, lol

They’re shy as hell on the US east coast because historically farmers killed them, but there was no such history on the west coast and they’re like really smart seagulls here. I see them watching roads and parking lots for food opportunities all the time. In the late summer I even see juvenile groups soaring and diving together sometimes. I lived 20+ years on the east coast and never saw a raven once.

Also, juvenile birds look bigger than usual when they have their mouths open for feeding.

I suspect it's an evolutionary adaptation to be the biggest target for food.

Someone doesn't need to spend a lot of money on a Halloween costume this year.
