The letter about hating the sea was written just after or at the end of his five year voyage on the Beagle. So, understandable.

> hates the sea

> hates bees

Could never be me.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Being at sea for several years changes people.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 24 points 2 months ago

Also, being in America and realizing the invasive little shits everyone generically refers to as "bees" are invasive species that precipitate the decline of native species changes people.

Tbf these are 5 quotes spread over 26 years, we're all a bit emo sometimes.

Turns out letters were like tweets back then lol

[–] flora_explora@beehaw.org 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

That's not totally untrue. Iirc the first cat memes were postcards people send each other at the beginning of the last century. I guess the difference is that postcards and letters only reach a single address, tweets can reach many people at once

In some ways, figures like Darwin and Attenborough are my heroes, so it's nice to see that these men are human and share similar distastes for fucked up shit as me.

Charles Darwin was actually just a teenage girl?

Wasps are my archetypal frenemy. I hate them, but I love them and what they do, but they can please do it far away from me, but they should also do it in my backyard, but not when I'm there, and I don't mind sharing food with them, but I can't stand having them near my food, and I don't want to hate them but whenever they're near I seize up and can barely breathe or move.

I don't like them half as much as they deserve.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Watch the wasps body language. If it's flying side to side, zigzagging towards you, vertically oriented, its time to get the fuck away. But if you're just chilling and it lands on you or nearby, its just curious, maybe give it some headpats.

[–] lennivelkant@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

vertically oriented

You mean if it's flying up and down, rather than left-right as they usually do?

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No, like instead being oriented like a dragonfly, its stinger is pointed down as it zigzags left and right towards you.

[–] lennivelkant@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ooooh okay, so that's the point where I stop clenching up and shit my pants instead? Thanks, good to know.

More seriously, thank you for sharing that knowledge. I'll still be terribly afraid of accidentally inhaling or ingesting them, or having them get in my pants without consent (again), but it should ease my fear of them intentionally attacking me.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 points 2 months ago

lol they can be suprisingly tolerant, only times Ive been stung was when I threw dirt onto one's home and accidentally grabbed one. When one flew into my motorcycle helmet, he left without stinging as soon as I slowed down.

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

I wonder what that was about - some sort of classification issue, or just having problems pinning them down?

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Really feeling 10 September.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 4 points 2 months ago

Sep 10 lookin' like groundhog day to me.

[–] Butterbee@beehaw.org 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Feeling a little blindsided by that last one

[–] psud@aussie.zone 1 points 2 months ago

I imagine he walked in grass barefoot or in sandals and got stung by a bee between his toes, having not noticed the bee in the clover

Such stings suck
