Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

On a slightly related note: could any US lemmings tell me why non-catholic christians in the US are so involved with the pope?

I have a friend from KY who went to Rome and everything. I asked her why, since she’s protestant, and she genuinely did not understand the question. Her entire family was praying for the pope. And they are methodists?

I have some catholics in my family and they would not bat an eye if the patriarch of Constantinople died. They consider orthodox Christians or protestants as a different religion.

I think there's a lot of Protestants who simply respect the Pope in general and this Pope in particular as a "good person", the same way Mother Teresa or Gandhi became culturally revered for their deeds not merely their position. They might also extend some of the same respect to Catholics in general (or they might not). Also a lot of them are not very critical thinkers and often don't have much of an education in theological matters (or at all).

Personal experience it is either extreme hate or extreme respect for the institution with no in between. The idea of not caring about them isn’t possible out here from a religious perspective

It's the same Americans who mourned the loss of Queen Elizabeth, some people just like to make celebrities their whole personality for no real reason.

He's a human being.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 20 points 9 months ago

Alright, Vance, do your thing.

[–] Liljekonvalj@feddit.org 20 points 9 months ago

This is so incredibly weird

[–] vegeta@lemmy.world 15 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Pope shmope, he was already declared God Emperor

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 13 points 9 months ago

This is a warning. This will be one time the Vatican, being a sovereign state, having money may be of practical good purpose. The battle is now between the church and billionaires/corporations.

Some guy on YT has been saying the world will be facing a decade of dark times; we will see.

[–] tgm@lemmy.world 12 points 9 months ago

Can't make this shit up

[–] maki@lemm.ee 12 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Look, nobody’s ever seen a pope like me before, folks. I’ve done more for Christianity than maybe anyone, ask anyone, they’ll tell you. The Vatican? Beautiful place, but it’s not winning anymore. We’re going to make the Church great again bigger congregations, stronger faith. Some of these cardinals? Total disasters. I’ve got the best relationship with the Bible. And frankly, people are saying lots of people that I’d be the greatest pope ever. Maybe even better than Peter. Not saying that, but people are.

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 11 points 9 months ago

Very moronic of him.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 11 points 9 months ago

Trump is like a game of hot potatoe and the Vatican now has it.

Good luck guys

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 9 months ago (1 children)

... I said this before as a joke.

Reality is now a HOI4 submod of a submod of Millenium Dawn, being played by WhatIfAltHist.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Not schizo enough for just WhatIfAltHist, must be a multiplayer game with Monsieur Z.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 9 months ago

Hah, maybe.

... Untill WhatIfAltHist breaks into MZ's house in the middle of a recording, Anne Wilke's MZ to his chair, breaks his wrists, and finishes the playthrough... and also edits and uploads it.

Fucking Pope Trump... absolute lunacy.

[–] ilmagico@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

If he becomes pope, does it mean he's not president of usa anymore? if so, please make the impossible happen! he won't be able to cause so much trouble as pope

[–] andallthat@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

true! Plus, there are already a bunch of really bad popes in the history of Christianity that would give Trump a run for his money

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 6 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Gotta admit, it was kind of funny watching the conservatives subreddit show anger at this and show the hypocrisy for a few hours until the mods cleaned up anyone who strayed from the narrative.

[–] Pip1234@lemm.ee 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This kind of thing makes the idea of having a senile president very appealing.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Well you've got one

[–] CaliforniaSober@lemmy.ca 3 points 9 months ago

This what you deserve.
