Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The Trump administration has drafted a memo to Congress outlining its intent to end nearly all federal funding for public media, which includes NPR and PBS, according to a White House official who spoke to NPR.

The memo, which the administration plans to send to Congress when it reconvenes from recess on April 28, will open a 45-day window in which the House and Senate can either approve the rescission or allow the money to be restored.

The official, who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity, confirmed the existence of the draft.

This isn't just one man demanding something be done and it happens .... he isn't some God or all powerful being that snaps his fingers

It's happening because an entire community of professionals, politicians, leaders, organizers and supporters all want it to happen.

Bingo. Trump is a symptom. You think these are all his ideas? Nah. He didn't write Project2025.

Turns out the “deep state” is real, but it purposefully worked to make sure the fingers were pointed in the wrong direction

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Exactly. Dementia donnie didn't build any of this. He just waltzed in and slapped his name on the place. The qons have been furiously working a certain kind of person into a froth over things like PBS and NPR for decades.

America's Mad King destroys more things he's too stupid and psychopathic to understand.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

This is red meat for the low-brow morons that have been GRRR, MAD about Nice Polite Republicans and the Petroleum Broadcast System ever since I can remember.

They don't actually watch or listen to either, but they sure are mad as hell about it because they have been told to be mad about it.

Someone dig up Mr Rogers to remind Congress to do the right thing.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 10 months ago

Fox News has already instructed them that Mr. Rogers is gay communist propaganda.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 13 points 10 months ago

wanna bet they will subsidize FOX, OAN, NEWSMAX, BREIBART instead.

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 11 points 10 months ago

Makes sense considering both NPR and PBS are reputable news sources that report fairly and do good journalism. IE, they tell the truth and can’t be paid off. Exactly what Trump hates.

[–] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Makes sense. Magats are so low IQ they cannot in fact read

[–] InverseParallax@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I mean, centuries of dedicated inbreding leave a mark.

[–] callmemagnus@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Wasn't there some discussions earlier about the fact that government funding was less than 1% of what's needed to run NPR ?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 10 months ago

They've been so starved for funding for decades now, that most of NPR's funding is from listener contributions. PBS as well, but I think to a slightly lesser degree.

[–] aow@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Nah they get more than that, it's like 40-70% but it filters through individual member stations. This cut will be felt. Even the shift in his first term towards more corporate donations to stay afloat hurt them, badly.

[–] aow@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

You know what, you're right. Numbers have shifted since I last checked this, there's more funding from members than before 2020. The (now 30%) station contribution has less federal dollars in it checking the larger station revenue reports. It's probably around 15% without spreadsheeting it, I didn't check PBS.

Once the dust settles after the oroborus system of ours dies, may infinite worlds blossom in the cracked pavement the old world left behind.

[–] Godort@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm not surprised. I'm disappointed, but not surprised

[–] ClanOfTheOcho@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

I'm surprised it took this long.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 months ago

He's asking now?

[–] Helvetica@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

Some Trump crony sent them a letter saying they could no longer criticize trump in any way and must praise trump at the start of each show and they said, uh, no fuck off. So they are cutting all their funds. This is just a guess.
