So, as a proud European, I enjoy my ability to speak multiple languages, and there are two thing GBoard does well:

  • Word suggestions in multiple languages - it is common for me to switch between my native language, Portuguese, and English, so when writing, GBoard fetches words to fill what I'm currently writing from both dictionaries, not just the one that is active.
  • Japanese in a QWERTY layout - when I need to write in Japanese, I can switch the language to Japanese with QWERTY, so that when I write "ka", it shows "か"

I've tried a bunch of keyboards, but they either miss one or the other feature. Do you guys know of an alternative? Thanks in advance!

Personally I use the open source FUTO Keyboard.

Heliboard (gboard fork)

Not sure about ka to () but everything else you said works (just have to enable it in the settings)

Someone at me if they find an answer. I used to use openboard which was the closest but it looks to be a dead project unusable on current android.

Openboard lives on, in new hands. Look up Heliboard.

Unfortunately there are no better keyboard than the Gboard for us multilingual people.

@David @wanderColossus Maybe. I still refuse to use it. I use either AOSP or the FUTO keyboard. Typing in Dutch, English and German most of the time. Not always great but I make it work

Honestly I think I maybe like FUTO better than Gboard. Maybe I've been using Heliboard too long and FUTO feels like such an upgrade...

Aber.. ich bin Amerikaner.. Wieso kann ich auf Deutsch schreiben, während ich kein Europäischer bin.. verdammt nochmal 🤦🏼‍♂️

All jokes aside I agree it is great being able to easily swipe to another language based keyboard. Unfortunatly I don't have a solution for you, but I will keep an eye open.

I think both Heliboard and the FUTO keyboard should work well for you. The FUTO keyboard just works noticeably better, and also has its own voice input.

Both support multilingual typing, so in can also scrivere un po' in Italiano, oder auch ein bisschen Deutsch, without even switching the keyboard's language.

FUTO is a US based organisation, but I don't care and maybe neither should you. Their keyeboard is open source and is so private that it does not even require an internet permission (Which even becomes slightly annoying when you have to download extra dictionaries by hand).

I didn't come across good Japanese Foss keyboard. There is Mozc for android that I switch between if I want to type in Japanese and use one that has easy switching between keyboards. (Helibord and unexpected keyboard.)

As a Japanese user, I prefer Mozc for Android on F-Droid. Though Fcitx5 with Anthy Plugin also supports Japanese typing, Mozc offers better word suggestions for now.
