Well, at least there isn't a narcissistic tech-billionaire around who doesn't care about human lives and is closely associated with the government.

[–] Scott_of_the_Arctic@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

Yeah! Thank god that isn't a thing! Also does anyone have the blueprints for tearblast arrows?

What's really concerning is that I have no idea if this is satire.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I think this is actually a real thing, but from like 10 years ago.

edit, there was a DARPA project that created a robot that could consume biomass as fuel, its acronym is EATR. According to wikipedia, it could "only" consume certain types of vegetation. But in the initial proposal, the developers also proposed chicken fat. So honestly, this probably exists and there might be a version of it that can consume meat.

If you think about it, any diesel powered vehicle is a robot that eats organisms for fuel.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (3 children)

And more than likely most of us here are using thinking stones powered by electricity created by very large machines far away eating organisms for fuel. Not to mention heating, but not everyone lives where there's only two seasons; winter and July. (Actually I pay extra to have a 100% renewables contract I think but idk how well those work.)

[–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 5 points 4 days ago

Not like that!

[–] gerowen@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's a whole video game series on why this is a terrible idea. (Horizon Zero Dawn)

[–] Scott_of_the_Arctic@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

I really like those games. I just don't want to be a character in them.

Patient: you're choking me!

Robot: squeezes harder

Can't wait for the black mirror episode based on this, as if the dog robot wasn't terrifying enough.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

It's literally the plot to Horizon Zero Dawn

[–] ZMoney@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Although several people in the replies have pointed out the actual truth behind this post, (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energetically_Autonomous_Tactical_Robot)

I do think this qualifies as misinformation. Given what happened on most other social networks, I can't help feeling uneasy even though it's a stupid joke post.

Awww I wanted it to gurgle blood in its wood chipper/mouth/head removal proboscis while it giggled through its speakers and says I Bring You Love, you know to attract more fuel.

It's been a trying day.

iirc this was just an engine that could run on most combustible hydrocarbons, a small gas turbine and some elaborate digestion setup I seem to remember, and the press really stretched a badly worded explanation of how it worked into 'it eats corpses'. Which is fair, humans are mostly made from tasty biomass, but still.

edit: here's a couple sources about it, it sounds like it does indeed run on vegetable biomass.

Screamers was about these war robots that became self aware and began killing not just because you were an enemy soldier but because they could use your body parts to lubricate their gears. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114367/
