i knew it would be in the article at some point:

Yet Todd still says: “I voted for Trump. I don’t regret that. We’re God-fearing, conservative people.”

troompa loompas could literally be starving in the street, their whole family dying of polio or some other shit we thought we got rid of, and they'll still sing the praises of the one who directly caused all their problems. because jesus, guns, and get rid of the brown people

[–] leftascenter@jlai.lu 73 points 5 days ago

Worst part is a modern US Jesus would be all eat-the-rich anti-establishment, founder of a commune (or several as he travels), and get killed "by accident" in an ICE raid.

Remember the Hermain Cain Award subreddit?

Hundreds of documented cases of people vehemently refusing real treatment for a 'fake' disease, being immensely cocky and belligerent untill very nearly the end, and then, near the end... still somewhere between defiant, in denial, and delusional.

... Those are the private citizens in the US with the vast majority of the guns.

You are completely correct, many areas of the US will collapse into pockets of highly armed, highly religious cults, utterly bereft of anything resembling logic, beyond the sociopathic logic of how to run a cult.

Basically, a couple of David Koresh's for every county. Good luck!

I am convinced that gun owners should be required to carry gun insurance... (policies for every gun they own) and I say that as a gun owner.... we have to carry car insurance, another lethal weapon that at least has a plausible other function. I live in a Blue State. Liberals also own guns, we just don't post pictures of them or open carry them in public. We actually follow the laws of our state for permits.

Exactly.

It's a coping mechanism for having a purely emotional relationship (i.e. pure tribalism) with a political "side" that has now been going on for so long and so intensely that it has become part of their personal identity, and then being negativelly impacted by the choices of the leaders of "their" side.

By this point such people would have to accept that what is now a huge part of their personal identity is bullshit, and people with the psychological and intelectual maturity required to be able to accept something like that and move on wouldn't have become tribalist muppets in the first place.

They will never, ever do that, rather what they do is invent excuses and deflections of blame.

This but unironically.

It's called Sunk Cost Fallacy, a basic concept in economics that even explains how gambling addictions begin and why it's so hard for people to stop until they've lost everything.

Anybody who says "we're a God fearing family" should be immediately locked up.

Firstly because it's a meaningless platitude that doesn't actually make sense, and secondly because it actually means ";-) I'm a Nazi, but obviously I would get offended if you ever actually called me out on it".

No nice person has ever said that.

[–] CannonFodder@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

It kinda makes sense to me. If I believed in the judeo christian god - an omnipotent being that has a vengeful, murderous history and has the emotional maturity of a 3 yo - yes I'd be living in fear of it.

"I have no Ethics or Morals, so I only ever do the right thing because I fear the wrath of an All Knowing and All Powerful entity if I don't"

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You missed the second bit, which is

"All the time acting in a manner that does not in fact suggest that I actually believe in an all-knowing entity. But rather in a way that suggests that I am using religion as a shield for being the world's worst person"

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I don't just mean that person, I mean anybody who would believe that "I'm a God fearing person" is actually the right thing to say.

I mean, if one thinks about it, it's curious that anybody would openly states that their relation to one's God is "Fear" rather than, say "Love", even if they are being entirely truthful in that.

"God loving" sounds a lot more respectful of a Deity, IMHO.

Further, even for that specific person my point still fits in a twisted way: that person chose that specific expression because deep down they believe people only restrain their bad actions because of fearing retribution.

It's a variant of Psychological Projection and thus still betrays that person's moral makeup: even as non-believers they use the "Fear of God" mantra because they themselves think that claiming that one has one's behavior under constant oversight from a deity which will punish bad behavior is the best way to convince others that one behaves in a good way, and they think so because they themselves restrict their negative behavior towards others through fear of external reprisal rather than through internal mechanisms such as guilt or a personal moral.

Even when people lie, you can still tell a lot about somebody by which lies they think will work best at convincing others.

Firstly because it's a meaningless platitude that doesn't actually make sense

The world runs on meaningless platitudes for these people!

I am not disagreeing with you; you're very much correct. But I think it's important to point out and not just let it pass by.

It's all part of the talking point conditioning and conforming that the right leans on so heavily. You need to superficially signal the right virtues with your appearance and speech.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 30 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And that quote is why I laugh at these fucking idiots. I genuinely do not have the capacity to empathize with people who are so idiotically and uncritically dogmatic.

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If you asked them what their dogma is and where it comes from, they wouldn't have any reply. These people are narcissistic, unserious and willfully illiterate.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Well, they don't know what dogma is

[–] Meron35@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

"It's what Haitians eat" - conservatives, ~~probably~~ actually

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 17 points 5 days ago

This is how you know it's a cult.

Jesus loved Rome and thought empire-building, pillaging and murdering were virtuous activities! 🙄 But this nonsense is exactly what these Burgers believe in. As always, their "religion" is just narcissistic performative nonsense, without submission to God.

[–] kinsnik@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

Yeah, if you keep saying "no matter how much you hurt me, i am still going to keep voting you into power", then you shouldn't be surprised that they hurt you as much as they can.

Having a limit on something that you see as a deal breaker is necessary and good, yet these people see that as a weakness

[–] DarkSideOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is the biggest difference between democrats and republicans… Republicans will vote, democrats wants purity on their ideals otherwise they don’t vote.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

purity on their ideals otherwise they don’t vote.

and somehow too dumb to realize their immature reaction drastically hurts those ideals.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 1 points 4 days ago

Yeh, it's like some Kim Jong Il shit ngl. Remember how North Koreans wept when he died?

Except fear for their life was the clear motivator there. Couldn't tell you what inspired these Americans to emulate them however. Maybe they're playing the long game for the imminent dictatorship.
