According to Canadian Blood Services, the demand for immunoglobulin is rising every year, but 70 per cent of Canada's supply comes from international sources - mostly the U.S.

Although there is no current shortage of immunoglobulin in Canada, the current political climate of protectionism in the U.S., coupled with the "dramatic" demand projected to increase about 10 per cent each year, could put the supply at risk, said Dr. Graham Sher, CEO of Canadian Blood Services.

Medical products are also Canada's 9th highest import from the US, to the amount of almost 6 billion dollars in 2024.

The Canadian market presents significant opportunities for U.S. exporters of medical devices, with the United States being Canada's largest trading partner for this sector. Total imports of medical devices satisfy approximately 70% of domestic demand. In 2022, the United States was the largest exporter of medical devices into the Canadian market, totaling US$3.2 billion, representing 42.6% imports in this sector.
